About the Opportunity:
Jacobs' Robotics Development Team offers start-to-end full system design, research, development and testing for integrated electro-mechanical and software systems. We create smaller and smarter robotics systems to solve complex inspection and maintenance challenges across multiple heavy industries. Key to our current and future success is a creative and innovative approach to commercialisation and business, ensuing that solutions can be rapidly deployed as well as rapidly developed. We are looking for a Business Development Engineer with a broad range of technical, commercial, and operational skills to join our team at the Birchwood campus. We anticipate this to be a challenging and fast-paced role with significant scope for on-the-job learning and future career growth.
Responsibilities of the role include:
  • Drive growth of the Robotics Development Team by:
    • Identifying and researching potential clients and opportunities for business growth. Establishing and maintaining relationships with existing and potential clients to understand their needs and requirements.
    • Creating technical proposals, bids, case studies, and presentations that demonstrate the value and capabilities of the team's products, projects, and services.
    • Liaising with technical experts to ensure proposals and bids are technically sound and feasible.
    • Providing technical and commercial support for the commercialisation of products and services.
    • Keeping up-to-date with industry trends, technologies and competitor activities, and providing insights to the team to improve business performance.
  • Provide organisational and technical support for ongoing projects by:
    • Championing a Systems Engineering approach to product/project development, including requirements capture, concept design, iterative testing, continuous integration, design for manufacturing and full-lifecycle management.
    • Acting as Product Owner to advocate for and ensure that development is in-line with the client requirements and expectations.
    • Help complete and maintain a technology development roadmap, ensuring that prerequisite engineering, organisational development, and research activity is completed to unlock future opportunities.
    • Providing a wider range multi-disciplinary engineering capacity across mechanical, electronics and software, to support technical project work on an as-needed basis.

Here's What You'll Need:
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent organisational skills, specifically the ability to maintain dynamic organisation in a fast-paced and growing team.
  • Good understanding of systems engineering principles, operational leadership, and project management.
  • A creative, innovative, and proactive approach to solving problems.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to learn new skills as needed.
Experience in the following areas would be advantageous:
  • Programming skills in languages such as C , Python, and C#.
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git and familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
  • Proficiency with the use of 3D CAD software for mechanical design (e.g. Solidworks).
  • Development, testing and integration of bespoke electronics, including PCB design (e.g. Altium).
  • Practical skills for light assembly including soldering and fine-scale work.
  • Strong understanding of physics and mathematics as they relate to software and hardware development.
