AddressMain purpose of the job:
Campus Safety and Security is responsible for ensuring our students, staff and visitors feel welcome and safe whilst on our 64-acre campus. The Safety and Security Officer is one of 24 roles working on a shift pattern 24/7, 365 days a year providing an approachable and engaging Safety and Security service that supports the needs of our community. The Campus Safety and Security Officer role includes patrolling the campus and ensuring the safety of people, property and equipment as well as dealing with any emergency incidents.
Main duties and responsibilities:
1. Provide a warm welcome to students, staff and visitors when patrolling, while monitoring, and where needed challenging, persons on campus for ID production during routine patrols of the campus, buildings and properties, helping ensure a safe and secure environment for our community.
2. Respond in a professional, customer focussed manner to requests for basic information and assistance from staff, students, visitors and emergency services on all Roehampton properties.
3. Use initiative, discretion and display flexibility and adaptability as well as respecting confidentiality whilst undertaking duties.
4. While undertaking patrols and the opening and locking of buildings, be vigilant to, and action/note/report as required maintenance defects and fire risks, taking action if safe to do so, particularly on anything affecting the security, safety or health of staff, student and visitors to campus (for example clearing fire risks).
5. Staff the Control Centre on a rota and operate all systems or services (CCTV, phones, radio system, issue keys and ID passes) as instructed by the Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager.
6. Attend emergency incidents acting as first responder to fire and intruder alarm activations, first aid or mental health or wellbeing issues, domestic situations or reports of crime.
7. Follow the instructions of the Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager, or Senior Security Officer as part of the response to incidents and major incidents.
8. To react and respond to anti-social or other poor behaviour by students, staff or visitors with a view to minimising the negative impact of such actions and maintaining good order and discipline on all Roehampton campuses.
9. Produce written reports when required for any incident dealt with during your shift or when carrying out your duties.
10. Provide the first response to students and site visitors for out of hours’ maintenance issues, to advise the Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager on their findings, the level of urgency and need for attendance by an on-call contractor or Maintenance Technician.
11. If required, carry out minor repairs or maintenance of security systems where appropriate (eg replace batteries in door access systems).
12. Drive university vehicles in a safe, responsible and legally and procedurally compliant way, to patrol the campus or to attend incidents.
13. Under the direction of the Senior Campus Safety and Security Officer or Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager, participate in fire evacuation drills, communicating with evacuated staff and students and ensuring they follow procedures.
14. With the support of the Senior Campus Safety and Security Officer or Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager, actively seek out opportunities to engage and positively contribute to university community and college activities .
15. Carry out all activities as requested by the Senior Security Officer or Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager whilst on shift and strictly in accordance with service Standard Operating Procedures.
16. Undertake training as required/instructed by the Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager
17. Undertake any other requirements commensurate with the seniority of the post/as required by the Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager or other senior staff.
