Thames Rivers Trust (TRT) is a registered charity focused on the promotion and delivery of an ecosystem-based approach to improving the Thames and its tributaries. We are a Thames Basin hub, which brings together organisations across the Thames River Basin, and fosters collaborative working to benefit the environment, wildlife and communities. We are committed to developing a collaborative, partnership approach that maximises the benefits of public, private and third sector organisations working together with communities to deliver integrated outcomes.

We are recruiting a CEO to further develop and implement Thames Rivers Trusts strategy and 3- year plan with the intention of making the role permanent for the successful candidate. The ideal candidate will be hands on and adaptable with the confidence, competence and potential to take our small charity to success at the next level.

This is an exciting career opportunity in the environmental sector, with flexibility for the right candidate. We are seeking an experienced CEO but would consider someone with relevant experience and the potential to swiftly, with support, reach CEO level. You will need to be ready to step up to new challenges with the motivation and drive to improve the Thames and its tributaries. You will have a passion for rivers and wildlife with proven interpersonal, advocacy and fundraising skills to work with a wide variety of partners and stakeholders.

Your priorities will include strengthening existing relationships and partnerships while also establishing new links with other organisations who have a stake in the future of the Thames and its tributaries. You will also be focused on sourcing significant funding and building capacity within the Thames catchment to undertake sustainable improvements to the river.

Key duties

Key duties will include:

• Leading the implementation of Thames Rivers Trusts strategy and ensuring delivery of the 3 year plan

• Reporting to the Board of trustees on progress of the main elements of work

• Fundraising, including grant applications and other sources of income

• Strengthening and building Thames Rivers Trusts partnerships and networks

• Overseeing publicity, press and other digital communications

• Managing other Thames Rivers Trust Project based staff

• Representing Thames Rivers Trust in meetings, talks and events

What are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will:

• Be an experienced operator and networker at a senior level or an individual ready to take the next step in their career

• Have a strong desire to improve rivers and the environment

• Have an understanding of river ecosystems, how they function and the issues they face

• Have proven experience working successfully in partnership with a range of organisations and people to achieve common goals

• Have a proven track record of successful fundraising at scale

• Be able to inspire and motivate internal and external colleagues

• Be personable, diplomatic but challenging to enable delivery of Thames Rivers Trusts objectives

• Be solution focussed and able to demonstrate strategic and innovative thinking

• Possess excellent communication and negotiation skills, both verbal and written

Desirable

• A working knowledge of GIS

• A full driving licence and access to a vehicle insured for business use

What We Offer

This is a 1-year fixed term contract of employment with potential to be extended. Flexible working, we are open to offering part-time hours, an average of 32 hrs p/w to full-time. We offer competitive rates of pay, £48k-£55k FTE dependent on experience or £48-£55k pro rata for part-time hours.

The contract is subject to a 3-month probationary period. Agreed expenses will be covered. We are also willing to consider a self-employed contractor for this post.

The successful candidate will report to the Chairman initially on a day-to-day basis with more autonomy as the role matures. You will be required to work remotely, but with regular travel within the Thames catchment to attend meetings and events in person (with some contacts via Zoom) and give press interviews.
