Job Description

Location: Edinburgh / Glasgow

Appointment of Chair

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) is one of Europe’s leading orchestras with a rich history stretching back over 125 years. It is one of Scotland’s leading cultural institutions, and an orchestra with a variety of work that is almost unparalleled amongst its British peers.

Our vision is that our music-making will engage hundreds of thousands of people every year, nationally and internationally, in person and online – bringing joy, connecting communities, and building skills, confidence and pride in Scotland.

We are seeking a dynamic and well-connected Chair with proven experience in a senior leadership role within Scotland, who can demonstrate excellent stakeholder engagement skills to help lead, guide and support our strategy. The Chair will provide strategic leadership to all Trustees and the CEO, ensuring that our mission, vision and values are lived and communicated. The successful candidate will have the support of a highly committed and experienced Board of Trustees, and a high performing and very capable executive team.

You will have a strong commitment to the principles underlying the work of the RSNO and the importance of music in society as well as a passion for classical music and/or the arts.

Our Chair is a key ambassador for the organisation internally and externally with stakeholders, including Scottish Government and supporters both at home and overseas. The growth and maintenance of highly positive relationships with funders, supporters and partners is of fundamental importance to the organisation. Therefore, regular attendance at concerts and occasionally on tours to promote awareness and interest, as well as encourage support are important aspects of the Chair role.

Candidates are likely to have governance experience at a strategic level, ideally from a previous Trustee, NXD or Chair role.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join an iconic Scottish organisation and really impact its future success. We look forward to hearing from you!
