Job description

Chair
Non remunerated
Headquartered in Edinburgh, however meetings may take place in other locations across Scotland, and occasionally online
Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans are Scotland's charities that support people living with sight loss. They provide a range of services including education, rehabilitation, and assistive technology to help people live independently and participate fully in society. Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans have a mission to transform outcomes for people with sight loss, unite partners and communities to support more people and to thrive and care for the people they support and work with. The values and purpose of the organisation are crucial threads in making sure that non-one should face sight loss alone.
For 230 years, Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans have been supporting people impacted by vision loss with a substantial reach across Scotland, working for all ages of society.
Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans play an important role in continually shifting the conversation around sight loss, and contributing to achieving a fair, equitable society. Their services reflect the times we live in and meet the changing needs of the people they support.
The role
Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans are on the search for their next Chair to head up their Board of Trustees. The charities are looking for an outstanding individual, with a strong and visible passion and commitment to Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans, its strategic objectives and mission. A clear interest in better outcomes for people with sight loss is essential. The successful candidate will have the strategic skills and acumen to lead Sight Scotland Sight Scotland Veterans into the next stage of its future.
This is a great time to be the Chair of Sight Scotland andScotland Veterans. The organisation has a new strategy and has recently gone through an exciting restructure of the Executive Leadership Team, where for the first time, services of the two charities have been brought together, bringing opportunities to work together for people with sight loss.
Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans already offer exceptional expert care, education, support and advice. But the successful candidate should share the organisation’s deep drive to want to do more – by reaching out in new ways across all of Scotland to many more communities and people with sight loss.
Role responsibilities include:
* To chair meetings of the Board and, in the absence of the Committee Convener, any Committee meeting at which they are present.
* To assist the Board in ensuring that all Trustees can meet their collective responsibility for the running of the charities, including their legal obligations.
* To review the Board’s agenda and business to ensure that it meets its responsibilities as required by charity law and other relevant legislation, in discussion with the Chief Executive.
* To support and advise the Chief Executive on policy, strategy and management matters, and to act as line manager of the Chief Executive on behalf of the Board.
The successful candidate should have:
* Skills at making strategic, operational and financial decisions.
* Have a breadth of experience and knowledge that can help shape Sight Scotland/Sight Scotland Veterans success.
* Display strong governance experience having previously or currently held a Board position.
* Have proven experience of chairing large decision making meetings
* Have an understanding of the governance, legal, and financial aspects of operating a charity
* A genuine passion for Sight Scotland/Sight Scotland’s impact for those with sight loss.
Evidence of strategic level experience in one of the following areas is desirable:
* Organisational change, including operational efficiency improvements.
* Audit
* Customer and client engagement
* Property and Estates Management
* Corporate and/or charity governance
* Medical research.
If you are interested in making a difference for those with sight loss and have the financial skills and experience to Chair the Board of Trustees of a complex and growing charitable organisation, Sight Scotland, and Sight Scotland Veterans, get in touch with Lauryn Pringle or Debbie Shields at Aspen People
