Job description

Inside Justice is a small charity, founded in 2010 and registered in 2018, which investigates alleged miscarriages of justice.

We are seeking to appoint a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead Inside Justice through the next exciting phase of our strategic development, and to motivate, inspire and build the capacity of our organisation, staff and networks.

Our work is to review and assess applications from prisoners usually serving long sentences for crimes they say they did not commit, to identify whether new legal, scientific or investigative work could be done to show possible wrongful imprisonment.

We have, in our trustees and Advisory Panel, ex high ranking police officers, DNA, blood, fibre, fingerprint and CCTV experts all at the peaks of their disciplines, who work on our cases pro bono.

When appropriate, we make submissions for cases to be heard at the Court of Appeal. When our casework identifies systemic failings, we undertake policy work to bring change for all entering the criminal justice system.

The CEO will work closely with the team and report to the Board of Trustees, with prime responsibility for driving the business in such a way that fulfils our goals, which are:

1. To investigate alleged miscarriages of justice, making submissions to the relevant public body if suitable grounds are identified by our Advisory Panel of experts

2. To lobby for change when systemic failings are identified.

Summary: An applicant must be a credible ambassador, a powerful communicator and an inclusive leader who has:

· experience of criminal law and/or policy/governance work;

· excellent strategic and business planning skills;

· ability to engage with donors, attract funding and strategic partnerships;

· skills to lead and develop our services to maximise their impact;

Responsibilities:

· Representing Inside Justice in a variety of forums with: trial legal representatives; applicants (prisoners); experts from a range of disciplines; victim’s and applicants’ families; trial witnesses;

· The ability to identify systemic failings identified by our casework and prepare submissions to criminal justice stakeholders (such as Government Select Committees);

· Deal effectively and persuasively with a wide range of people, both within and outside the charity, as part of a multi-skilled team and on an individual basis in order to ensure effective and successful conduct of cases;

· Establish credibility and earn respect by the depth of their knowledge and influence others on the basis of their specialist knowledge;

· Assist with identifying donors and potential sources of funding for the charity;

· Provide regular reports to the Board of Trustees when required;
