Job description

About Games Workshop Group PLC

Games Workshop Group PLC is a UK manufacturer of miniature wargames, based in Nottingham. We are best known for our product brands: Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. We listed on the London Stock Exchange as a FTSE 250 company in 1994

Our people love the business they work in as well as being invested in the success of the Warhammer hobby and we all have a simple aim: to design, make and sell the best fantasy miniatures and games in the world - engaging and inspiring customers with the stories, characters and settings that make up the Warhammer universes. Warhammer has a rich IP that's both broad and deep and Games Workshop is also committed to realising those universes beyond the tabletop - in video games, in live action and in animation.

We employ more than 3,000 people globally, with great skills, attitudes and behaviours. As we continue on our exciting journey, Games Workshop is looking to appoint a CFO with a relevant background from one of a range of sectors, including design to manufacture, e-commerce, IT and distribution/logistics. Games Workshop is a UK based manufacturing business with international distribution, multichannel retail, digital activities and growing IP licensing. We want the right person to help support the group's international growth and exploitation of its IP.

Culture

We are both focused on and extremely proud of our strong internal culture, loyal staff, and customer base and seek a new CFO who can bring an appreciation of this as well as a passion for the work they will do. You will understand that culture is more than just words; understanding and championing this is key.

The company has a definite set of ideas, beliefs and ways of doing business. It believes that how you behave does matter - attitudes and behaviours such as honesty and integrity are as important as skills. You will need to spend sufficient time in the company to get a feel for its culture, it's hard working and enthusiastic people and learn how you deliver the day job and plan for the future. This is a board level recruit so the chemistry between board members is also paramount.

Our successful candidate would join a small and effective operational team based in Nottingham, UK, that has consistently delivered an exceptional performance. You will also play an important role on a small and effective board comprising a non-executive Chair, CEO and three other non-executives, who meet once a month in Nottingham at board meetings and at other times, when necessary.

Role specification

Reporting to the CEO, this is a board level appointment, helping the CEO manage the business through cash management and a value based (ROC) approach. Managing all financial operations of the Group including financial systems and controls, planning, cost management, risk and reporting. Also, as an integral part of the senior management team, in a vertically integrated business, the job also includes managing the Group's shared services internally, consisting of IT, legal, HR, and credit control, to deliver high quality work and services.

You will need to quickly understand the dynamics and culture of the business, where it has come from and its present strategies. As an executive director you will play an active and positive role on the board: applying your experience to support the business' continued growth, to deliver a great return on capital over the long-term, and to uphold its culture and ethics. You will be confident in your ability to oversee risk management for the Group and passionate about promoting and championing Games Workshop externally.

Person specification

We seek an open-minded individual who can display a positive attitude at all times and is cheerfully focused on delivering ever better results.

We have some core principles that guide us and a great team spirit built on trust. We fail and win together, our results are driven by a huge team effort. We will demand that when you're with us you always put Games Workshop's interests first.

In addition, the right candidate will bring:

  • The ability to quickly develop an understanding of Games Workshop's exciting culture, operations, markets, and strategic priorities. The right candidate will be willing to spend time with staff, enquiring and listening to develop a thorough understanding of the company, its people, and its niche business model.
  • A customer focus. Always keeping one eye on investing the right amount in design to manufacture and customer engagement and services
  • Gravitas and relevant insights to contribute at board level A collaborative approach. You must be a team player focused on our long-term future and not personal success. You must be ego-free
  • A can-do attitude: always assessing the environment to ensure we have the right financial plans in place that mitigate risk
  • A demonstrable, successful track record as a senior finance leader who has supported an operational team to deliver exceptional performance over many years, helping drive long term shareholder value. Particular expertise in supporting the implementation of complex IT and/or digital projects - managing the associated risks and capital investment decisions - an advantage
  • Affinity with Games Workshop as an international organisation with a UK base and heritage, and growing operations in North America has highlighted growth potential in Asia; they will ideally have some first-hand experience of international marketplaces, particularly in those two geographical growth areas
  • A firm belief that a focus on net cash generation rather than reported sales and profits are in the organisation's best long-term interest

The successful candidate will have the ability both to appreciate the history and culture of the organisation and to provide appropriate challenge and counsel to the experienced management team to support Games Workshop.

We welcome applications from candidates with the required personal qualities, experience, and skills from all backgrounds and are committed to enhancing the diversity of the board at Games Workshop.
