Job description

About the NMC

Our vision is safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery practice that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing. As the independent regulator of more than 808,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have an important role to play in making this a reality.

About the role
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual seeking a varied and exciting role as the Chief of Staff for Professional Regulation. In this key position, you will provide direct support to the Executive Director, ensuring the successful delivery of the directorate’s strategic objectives and projects. As a critical conduit between the Executive Director and the wider Executive Management and Senior Management Team, you will play a pivotal role in driving improvements, fostering collaboration, and managing high-profile issues. This is a new role which the individual will be able to shape to add real impact to the Directorate.
Key Accountabilities:

  • Support the Executive Director and Executive Management Team in effective delivery of responsibilities through outcome-focused governance and engagement.
  • Ensure the Executive Director receives timely, high-quality briefings and support, setting standards and driving continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Planning and Performance to maintain a focus on performance delivery within an evolving context.
  • Collaborate to shape and implement Professional Regulations equality, diversity, and inclusion action plan.
  • Develop and maintain strong links across the directorate, wider NMC, and key stakeholders.
  • Act on behalf of the Executive Director on key issues, representing their views and acting as a critical gateway.
  • Design, lead, and manage the Professional Regulation extended private office function, optimizing the Executive Director’s time and priorities.
  • Provide inspirational leadership to the private office function, modelling NMC values and behaviours.

About You
You will have the ability to work at pace, using sound judgement in areas where perhaps information is incomplete. Using your excellent communication skills, you will be able to influence decisions and direction at all levels. The role requires a high degree of aptitude when it comes to working flexibly and at pace and picking up knowledge of different areas quickly in order to make sound decisions.
This role requires a proven record of delivering impact and experience of demonstrating credibility and gaining the trust of senior stakeholders. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to balance core business regulatory priorities alongside priorities to make step changes to improve how we regulate.
Previous experience of the regulatory sector or leading complex casework would be an advantage. You will be able to demonstrate previous experience of operating at a senior level in a complex organisation with a dedication and commitment to driving high levels of Staff engagement.

Benefits

  • 30 days annual leave - plus eight days paid bank holidays
  • Enhanced Pension Contributions via our attractive Pension Scheme – with a basic 8% employer contribution as standard which increases up to 14% with optional added Employee Contributions

About Us

Our core role is to regulate. First, we promote high education and professional standards for nurses and midwives across the UK, and nursing associates in England. Second, we maintain the register of professionals eligible to practise. Third, we investigate concerns about nurses, midwives and nursing associates - something that affects a tiny minority of professionals each year. We believe in giving professionals the chance to address concerns, but we’ll always take action when needed.

To regulate well, we support our professions and the public. We create resources and guidance that are useful throughout people’s careers, helping them to deliver our standards in practice and address new challenges. We also support people involved in our investigations, and we’re increasing our visibility so people feel engaged and empowered to shape our work.

Regulating and supporting our professions allows us to influence health and social care. We share intelligence from our regulatory activities and work with our partners to support workforce planning and sector-wide decision making. We use our voice to speak up for a healthy and inclusive working environment for our professions.
