North Waltham Primary school is a happy, friendly and welcoming village school close to Basingstoke, just off Junction 7 of the M3. We provide an inclusive learning environment ensuring that children feel happy, safe and valued in school. Our children leave us with the skills, values and knowledge to prepare them for the next phase of their education, as well as happy memories of their time at our village school. We have a wonderful environment comprising historic buildings, attractive classrooms and extensive grounds.
The clerk will be accountable to the governing body, working effectively with the chair of governors, headteacher and other governors. The clerk will be responsible for advising the governing body on constitutional matters, duties and powers and will work within the broad current legislative framework.
Formal meetings are held at the school or via Teams (early evening). The clerk will be expected to be present and to produce accurate draft minutes for circulation within two weeks of each meeting.
Additional hours may be required on an ad-hoc basis, for example training and extraordinary meetings. These hours will be paid in addition to the contracted hours.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Sharepoint and Teams is required and experience of minute taking is advantageous.
Full training can be provided.
The successful candidate will:
Work effectively with the chair and headteacher before full governing body meetings, to prepare a purposeful agenda which takes account of DfE and LA issues and is focused on school improvement.
- Produce, collate and distribute the agenda and papers
- Encourage the headteacher and others to produce supporting documents for meetings on time
- Record the attendance of governors at the meeting and take appropriate action re absences
- Advise the governing body on governance legislation and procedural matters where necessary before, during and after the meeting
- Take the minutes of full governing body meetings
- Advise the governing body on procedural issues
- Ensure that statutory policies are in place and that a file is kept in the school of policies and other school documents approved by the governing body
- Maintain a ‘policy’ tracker spreadsheet to ensure review dates are met
- Maintain records of governing body correspondence
- Successfully complete the National Training Programme for Clerks to Governing Bodies or its equivalent
- Keep up-to-date with current educational developments and legislation affecting school governance
- Maintain the Governor Hub ensuring all documentation is uploaded within agreed deadlines
- Be calm and unflappable, with a good sense of humour
- Be highly motivated and enthusiastic
