The Job Role
Working effectively with the Chair of Governors, and with the Head Teacher and other Governors, we are looking for a Clerk to the Governors, who will provide advice to the Governing Body on governance, constitutional and procedural matters.
He/She will contribute towards the efficient and effective functioning of a governing board by providing:
- administrative and organisational support
- guidance to ensure that the board works in compliance with the appropriate legal and regulatory framework and understands the potential consequences for non-compliance
- advice on procedural matters relating to the operation of the board
The successful clerk will have:
- Minimum of two GSCE passes at level C or above including English Language
- At least one year’s experience of agenda setting, minute taking and committee administration
- Basic knowledge of governor or educational issues
- Awareness of the importance of confidentiality
- Ability to develop an understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities of the Governing Body, the headteacher, Local Education Authority and the Department for
- experience of minute-taking,
- Experience of working in education
- good IT and communication skills
- able to work with minimal supervision and on their own initiative. Training for clerks is provided by the local authority, as well as opportunities to network with other clerks.
- A creative and flexible approach to problem solving within a legal framework
- Have their own transport, telephone and personal computer/word processing facilities
Flexibility in terms of working hours is required. We work with the circle-model, meaning we have whole Governing Body meetings (9 in total) every month, apart from January, April and August. The meetings are on Mondays at 7pm, but this might be changed if necessary. Whilst working hours are limited, we expect our Clerk to regularly check and respond to emails as this is the main communication method between school, the clerk and the Governing Body. At times, you might be asked to clerk working groups and arrange panel meetings as required, for which you will be paid extra hours.
