Job description

Are you an enthusiastic and ambitious clinician looking to be part of a leading inter-disciplinary research team? Do you wish to gain experience in clinical translational research? Do you have an interest in Inherited Cardiac Conditions or congenital heart disease? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading Biomedical Research Centres and Universities?

An opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled and enthusiastic clinician to work with world-leading researchers at the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre and the Faculty of Biology, Medicine & Health, University of Manchester.

This full-time post, for two years in the first instance with the opportunity to extend for a third year, offers an opportunity to develop research skills and clinical experience in Inherited Cardiac Conditions or congenital heart disease. You will be a key member of a team of clinical academics based across University of Manchester and Manchester Foundation NHS Trust, studying a wide range of Inherited Cardiac Conditions. You will have the opportunity to study for a higher degree (MD or PhD) while taking full advantage of the outstanding available opportunities to produce research outputs that will advance your career.

The candidate will have the opportunity to perform research in one of four research areas depending on their specific interest:

1.  Genomics of congenital heart disease: A variety of clinical and laboratory research projects are in progress in Professor Keavney’s group, focusing on discovery and functional genomics of CHD.

2. Sports cardiology: This will be under the supervision of Dr. Malhotra whose work focuses on differentiating physiological changes in the athlete’s heart from pathological features of cardiomyopathy that predispose to sudden cardiac death.

3. Cardiac channelopathies: This project will be under the supervision of Dr Venetucci. It will explore novel therapeutics for Long QT syndrome and Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia.

4. Cardiomyopathies: This project will be under the supervision of Professor Crean, who is interested in cardiomyopathies (especially hypertrophic), coronary artery anomalies, and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy amongst many other things. He is now starting to move into the field of radiomics and machine learning as applied to rare diseases.

You will be medically qualified, with MRCP or equivalent, some experience of cardiology, a plan to pursue a cardiological career, and full GMC registration.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
