Job description


This is a fixed term appointments for 12 months from August 2024 in line with junior doctor rotations and give an exciting opportunity to become part of the teaching team at NLAG teaching medical and Physician Associate students from Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and Sheffield Medical School. This post is suitable for trainees whose career would be advanced by the opportunity to develop specialist teaching skills. This might be of interest to registered practitioners who are studying for a higher qualification, writing up research, or applying for higher specialist training rotations, or any combination of these. It may also appeal to higher trainees who wish to take time out of a training programme, subject to the approval of the appropriate Specialist Training Committee.
Posts are available as either full-time (40 hours) or part-time and predominantly based on one site (either Grimsby or Scunthorpe) but some cross site working will be required. Hours, days and sites will be discussed with successful applicants.
• Deliver teaching sessions to students. This may be bedside teaching (in small groups observing student history taking and examination skills and giving feedback), case-based discussions, delivering seminars, teaching physical examination skills etc
• Assist with simulation training for 5thyear students providing detailed feedback and areas for improvement
• There is a support and pastoral element to the role ensuring students settle into placements and are able to seek advice and support from Fellows
• Work in a small friendly team committed to providing an excellent student experience and continuously looking to improve our delivery
We are a small friendly team lead by a Clinical Dean and Teaching Fellows play a valuable role in our education delivery. We teach students in years 3 to 5 of their MB BS programmes and a small number of Physician Associate students. There can be up to 100 students at a time on each main hospital sit who rotate through specialty blocks (Cardiology/Respiratory, Metabolic, GI/Surgery, Paediatrics etc). 5thyear placements take place in Medicine and Surgery where students work with the full clinical team in preparation for FY1 posts and undertake A-E simulation training.

• Deliver teaching sessions to students. This may be bedside teaching (in small groups observing student history taking and examination skills and giving feedback), case-based discussions, delivering seminars, teaching physical examination skills etc
• Use Trust systems to identify patients for bedside teaching and obtain consent ensuring patients understand what is required
• Assist with simulation training for 5thyear students providing detailed feedback and areas for improvement
• Write and suggest new scenarios for simulation in liaison with the Lead Skills Facilitator
• Support the Clinical Skills Team in the delivery of mandatory training and procedural skills training
• Create, update or refresh teaching presentations as required
• Develop teaching materials/sessions in response to student feedback and identified delivery gaps
• Deliver 5thyear “Carry the Bleep”, “Medical Emergencies” and “Surgical Emergencies” sessions using (and updating existing resources) to help prepare students for F1
• Deliver teaching via MSTeams as required
• Undertake BLS training update to become a recognised trainer for students
• Take part in student inductions welcoming student to NLaG
• Plan, co-ordinate and deliver revision sessions recruiting faculty as appropriate
• There is a support and pastoral element to the role ensuring students settle into placements and are able to seek advice and support from Fellows
• Be a ‘friendly ear’ for students to raise any concerns they may have while on placement. This may be teaching delivery, a patient safety concern, a complaint and escalate as appropriate
• You may need to address any concerns you have regarding a student/their behaviour directly with a student or, if more serious, raise a formal Expression of Concern
• Assist in any assessment and examination as required
• Deliver virtual simulation training (via virtual reality headsets; training will be given).
• Postholders will be expected to raise awareness of undergraduate medical education with junior doctor colleagues and build up a range of contacts and support for the students to enhance the student experience
• Postholders will need to undertake the HYMS Tutor Development training and other training relevant to the role
• Feedback to the Clinical Dean/Schools regarding their block structure, core topics and learning outcomes and feed into the continuous review and improvement of the curriculum.
• Attend meetings and team events as required
• Ensure Trust mandatory training is complete
