Commercial Lawyer

Purpose of the job:

This is a broad and challenging role which provides a great opportunity for a qualified experienced Commercial or Corporate Lawyer to show off their legal drafting, communication, collaboration, and contract negotiation skills.

The role includes drafting and negotiating a wide range of customer and supplier contracts, as well as providing litigation support, drafting policies and procedures, championing the company's governance and compliance processes (including co sec), managing the trade marks portfolio, and managing GDPR and data access queries.   Actively maintaining and sharing legal and regulatory knowledge is crucial, as is providing commercially pragmatic legal advice. The ability to articulate a risk position on legal issues is essential. Clear and succinct communication is essential.   

The role requires the ability to provide effective supervision, mentoring and training across the team and the wider business.  

Key responsibilities:

  • Review, draft and negotiate a wide range of contracts (including for energy end users, business agents, energy retailers and trade suppliers)
  • Review, amend, draft, develop and maintain legal team’s precedents, policies and procedures
  • Negotiate directly with customers and third parties (in conjunction with our business stakeholders)
  • Support general in-house legal work such as PSC Registers, confirmation statements, insurance renewals,
  • Research specific legal and procedural topics, and become a subject matter expert in the legal and regulatory frameworks within which our companies operate
  • Actively manage your own case load and deadlines
  • Provide ad hoc support to the team and the business (e.g. supporting with audits, maintaining departmental registers, running reports, managing invoicing, assisting with GDPR matters such as DSRs/DPIAs, civil disputes / employment tribunals)
  • Proactively maintain professional and legal skills and knowledge through own learning
  • Communicate key information accurately and feedback promptly to relevant stakeholders, ensuring comments and concerns are sought, with escalation to line manager where appropriate
  • Draft, review and update precedent documents including producing sample clauses, maintain, review and update policy, procedure and process documents, along with final review checking.
  • Develop, maintain and sustain knowledge of regulations and codes which apply to our business and to the Legal Department
  • Develop and maintain professional, friendly and constructive relationships with all stakeholders building an exceptional reputation for the Legal Department and Company
  • Maintain contract databases, including contracts, insurance and sample drafting to identify key information

Experience/qualifcations required:

  • Minimum 6* years’ post-qualification experience in a Commercial Law or Corporate Law team and:

- at least 3* years must have been obtained working as a lawyer in a busy in-house team

- private practice experience should be from a national or regional corporate law firm

  • UK-qualified solicitor *or Fellow* of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives
  • Good academic background
