The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is an independent statutory body, created to investigate possible miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We help safeguard the rights of the individual and the integrity of the justice process by considering whether convictions are safe and sentences correct and by sending appropriate cases back to the appeal courts.
Commissioners make casework decisions by themselves or as part of a committee of three Commissioners. They may also become involved in the most complex CCRC cases from the start to help decide what investigations are needed. The majority of a Commissioner’s time is normally spent taking decisions in respect of individual cases on their own.
The CCRC welcomes applications from both lawyers and those not legally qualified in addition to welcoming applications from those who also hold posts in the criminal justice system which do not raise an issue in respect of conflict of interest. The CCRC considers that posts which do raise an unacceptable level of conflict include lawyers representing those involved in criminal cases or lawyers sitting or working in the Court of Appeal Criminal Division.
This position attracts a fee of £460 per day with a minimum time commitment of 52 days per year for a 3 year term. The expected start date is January 2025.
