The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers (WCI) is one of the Great XII livery companies in the City of London. The history of the Company dates back over 700 years, with its roots in the iron trade.
The WCI is a membership organisation with approximately 400 members, which has been granted the Royal Charter and administers six charities, focused on the education of the young, the care of the elderly, metals and materials science.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Communications Manager who, working with the respective Committees and the Clerk (CEO), will lead on all aspects of the development and delivery of the WCI’s communications strategy in line with the organisation’s new business plan.
Purpose
The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy to support the WCI and its charitable foundation.
Scope
The postholder will need:
- Experience in communications gained from working in a similar or related position including developing and implementing communications strategies.
- Experience of developing and managing communications channels including newsletters, websites and social media.
- Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to produce engaging content for different audiences across a range of formats (email, website, publications).
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communications skills. Able to establish a strong degree of confidence and credibility, and build effective working relationships with a wide range of people.
- Strong organisational and planning skills. Able to manage multiple projects to deadline.
- Able to use own initiative with the willingness to take responsibility and make decisions based on sound judgement.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision.
- Excellent IT skills including Office, Content Management Systems, Mailchimp and Canva.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead, manage and take strategic responsibility for all communications with support from the Communications Working Group.
- Develop and deliver the communications strategy in line with the Company’s business plan, exploring forward thinking and innovative methods to engage new and existing members.
- Develop and manage the Company’s external website and members’ area, improving its functionality and ensuring that content is accurate and up-to-date (liaising with our website provider as necessary).
- Produce a regular e-newsletter and other printed/digital publications.
- Manage the design and production of the Annual Report including writing and commissioning content, and arranging printing and distribution.
- Provide communications advice and/or support to the Charities team and the Company’s Committees.
- Provide communications advice and/or support to the Clerk’s Office Team in relation to admissions, events and membership engagement.
- Develop, maintain and protect the Company’s brand.
- Act as brand guardian, ensuring consistency in all communications including design and messaging.
- Uphold and protect the Company’s reputation.
- Maintain a quietly alert posture in terms of reputation management, harness PR opportunities in line with the organisation’s business plan, and manage and mitigate any potential risks.
- Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of all communications.
Terms and Conditions
- Salary £40k per annum pro rata – position offered on a 2.5 day basis (£20k)
- Annual leave 25 days annual leave pro rata plus statutory holidays and Christmas close period
