Job description

THE ROLE

We are looking for a first-rate Communications Consultant (corporate communication and Media) with two to three years industry experience to join our growing team. You will have an excellent grasp of what makes a compelling news story, experience in generating proactive stories which set the news agenda and secure positive, high profile, national and trade news for our clients, as well as a proven track record of advising clients on complex reputational and crisis communications issues.

As an experienced consultant you will play a vital role as part of integrated campaign teams, working with your account leads to navigate complex policy landscapes to help deliver clear and compelling communications that redefine conversations and accelerate or unlock positive change. You will be able to spot reputational risks for clients and seize opportunities within the news agenda to raise awareness of their work. You will be brimming with creative ideas, strong contacts, high standards of writing and a real passion for your work. We welcome applications from candidates who have media, agency, or in-house experience.

In your role as a Consultant you will be responsible for providing high-quality support in the delivery of campaigns and communications strategies, media management, coalition building, and providing insight to our clients. Reporting to a Senior Consultant you will manage research and execution on accounts, building relationships with clients, often leading on client delivery calls, whilst helping us build client and Media networks.

Our Consultants support the team with day-to-day management of clients across numerous accounts and are expected to develop relationships with clients by demonstrating an understanding of how client objectives can be supported through communications strategy.

  You will be responsible for

  • Provide day-to-day support on client accounts, assisting the client team with successful delivery of work and managing client communications
  • Proactively meeting the needs of clients by anticipating needs, identifying challenges, and addressing them
  • Helping to develop and deliver high-quality creative campaigns and Media strategies for high profile clients, based on strategic data and insight
  • Managing media sell in, radio mornings, and staffing interviews as part of client programmes of work
  • Building trusted relationships with clients, offering advice on the media agenda and handling communications issues, including reputational risk and crisis management
  • Monitoring and collating targeted industry intelligence, including media and political coverage, as well as evaluating media reach and sentiment of coverage
  • Drafting key messages, core narratives and Q&A documents on behalf of clients
  • Drafting, clearing, and selling in press materials to print, broadcast, and trade media
  • Building, maintaining and growing a network of media contacts in support of Stonehaven’s work
  • Keeping track of delivery of work against agreed plans and objectives, helping co-ordinate work and keep track of deadlines
  • Staying abreast of political, business, and social trends, whilst building your own network with clients to support organic growth and new business efforts
  • Supporting analysts in their professional development and supporting on media training sessions for the wider team

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Essential skills:

  • Relevant experience in a Communications and client engagement role
  • A demonstrable understanding of the media and political landscape relevant to Stonehaven’s work, including experience “selling in” a story to trade, regional and national media 
  • A first-rate writer who can demonstrate success in a range of styles but particularly in drafting and landing press notices and op-eds
  • A creative thinker who can come up with fresh ideas both for campaigns and news stories
  • A trusted adviser who can provide sound advice to clients and senior colleagues about reputational risk and Media opportunities
  • An experienced operator (minimum 3 years) in delivering multi-channel communications campaigns through both traditional and digital media
  • Strong project management skills and experience and an ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities

Preferable skills:

  • Press office experience with a growing network of trade and national journalists 
  • An understanding of media databases such as Roxhill, Factiva and Onclusive
  • A strong working knowledge of business and sector issues relevant to Stonehaven’s work
  • Confident in presenting to both small and large groups, including a pitch environment
