This Control Systems Engineer will report to the Control Systems Data Solutions Manager and will work within Network Operations, Control Systems and Automation based in our Fore Hamlet office. You will be a permanent employee.

You will attract a salary of 71,914 per annum and a bonus of 3%.

Job Purpose:

The role of Control Systems Engineer is to develop Control Systems applications, services and data for EPN, LPN and SPN networks ensuring safe operation and positive impact on reduction of customer interruptions and customer minutes lost.

You will be part of a team bringing improvement and progress to all three network Control Systems across Smart Metering, DSO, DMS, SCADA, Automation, OMS, LV and Mobile applications. This will require the post holder to have and the ability to work across all levels with all partners.

You will be part of a team that maintains Control Systems application support 24 hours a day to ensure 24/7 availability of business-critical systems.


Principal Accountabilities:
  • Ensure highest standards of safety are applied across all responsibilities.
  • Involvement in the use of new technologies and industry development schemes from a systems architecture, integration and data engineering standpoint, with the goal of influencing business benefit achieved.
  • Work with all partners to identify use cases and user stories for business improvement, bringing systems integration and data to life.
  • Maintain Control System applications configuration, monitoring, performance and preventative maintenance.
  • Responsible for problem resolution including in-depth root cause analysis for all Control and SCADA subsystems.
  • Liaison with 3rd party service providers to develop new functions and rectification of service issues.
  • Creation, implementation, tracking and assurance of system change notice, covering development tasks.
  • Use UKPN Smart Meter data and pursue systems integration with the national smart metering programme to create operational benefit.
  • Provision of Control Systems Data Analysis and Regulatory Reporting.
  • Liaison with IS Infrastructure and Ops Telecoms teams with a view to constant systems improvement though collaboration and proactive fault finding.
  • Prepare accurate reporting on system performance, availability and risk.
  • Participation in Software improvement and upgrade projects including testing, implementation and support.
  • Document and implement operational standards relating to Control Systems.
  • Provide technical advice to all parts of the business on matters relating to DSO, Control, SCADA and associated subsystems.
  • Support business case development for Control Systems projects.


Nature and scope:

The Control Systems Engineer reports to the Control Systems Data Solutions Manager within the Network Control and Operations team. The Control Systems and Automation team are dedicated to making UK Power Networks Control Systems world class.

The team goal is to improve safety, application performance, innovation, data accuracy and usability with a view to reduce CI's and CML's whilst maximising return on investment and ensuring DSO. Important to this is providing a Control System solution and service that is accessible and beneficial to the entire business.

You will manage tasks with a view to driving forward UK Power Networks Smart Metering platform and integration into our ADMS Control Systems and operational processes. You will develop operational tools for UKPNs DNO Indicators and successful transition to DSO with a view to make UK Power Networks Control System the best in the world.

It is our ambition to be regarded as an industry leader in the area of Control Systems and Automation. Above all, the role holder must have the capability to develop important areas of the Control Systems to achieve this objective.


Qualifications:

You will have experience in DMS and SCADA systems relating to the utilities sector and be able to demonstrate a and commitment towards safety, meeting business targets and finding solutions. We ask that you work with other partners and develop and implement new projects.

  • Have a level 4 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Have working experience working within developed control and automation system environments including Smart Grid and Low Carbon projects.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the distribution network and operating practices from LV to 132kV.
  • Have working experience with scripting languages such as SQL, Perl, Python, C, PHP and VB.
  • Have an In-depth understanding of SCADA systems and integration including DNP3, WISP+ and other industry protocols.
  • Have a sound technical background in the operation of Control Systems applications.
  • Have experience in data engineering, data interrogation techniques, and systems integration.
  • Have to support and influence partners.
  • Can work co-operatively with others to achieve shared goals.
  • Understand GS and OS standards and the OFGEM regulatory framework.
  • Have a, without losing sight of safety and profitability.
  • Have good abstract reasoning.
