To support immediate data analysis to inform profiles of need
PURPOSEThis is a Public Health post which will provide wide opportunities for further developing a Public Health career. The post holder will provide health intelligence advice and support to other members of the division across the broad spectrum of Public Health, and have a major input into work on the development of policies, projects and services. The post will support the evidence-based delivery of Council, NHS and other services to the Southwark population to promote better health and wellbeing and to reduce health inequalities.
To undertake a combination of complex analytical work applying innovative biostatistical, epidemiological and econometric approaches to large datasets as well as routine reporting to fulfil the organisation’s statutory responsibilities.
To take a strategic health intelligence lead on major, specific areas of work identified within key Public Health programmes and/or lead responsibility for managing the development, implementation and evaluation of projects, programmes and other areas of work, working to the Head of Health & Wellbeing.
To work with commissioners and others to provide health intelligence to ensure that high quality commissioning, based on need and evidence, supports health improvement. The post holder will work with services and other partner organisations to help build health intelligence capacity and capability and support the design, implementation and evaluation of services and pathways.
The post holder will critically appraise evidence from a range of sources, make recommendations and take actions to implement, based on a sound and thorough understanding and analysis of the evidence base, information and data.
The post holder will be responsible for creating and sustaining good working relationships in support of developing and delivery of key Public Health outcomes, within the Council, the NHS and Community and Voluntary Sector.
The post holder will be required to attend occasional evening and weekend meetings and events in a variety of settings and locations across the borough.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES- To take a strategic lead on health intelligence projects, undertaking complex analytical work applying innovative bio-statistical, epidemiological and econometric approaches to large datasets as well as routine reporting to fulfil the organisation’s statutory responsibilities.
- To demonstrate in-depth knowledge of health intelligence approaches and the Public Health evidence base that informs regional and local programme delivery and health and wellbeing policies and procedures.
- To appropriately manage large confidential datasets in line with information governance principals in place within the Public Health division and Council, in accordance with local agreements in place with the data controller e.g. NHS Digital.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Educated in a suitable postgraduate qualification in Public Health, statistics or equivalent
Proven experience of using statistical methods to inform needs assessments through the collation, analysis and interpretation of key Public Health and Council data, information and evidence
Proven experience of applying public health techniques and processes, including health needs assessments, equity audits and evaluations
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITY
High standard of report writing and communication skills, demonstrated by the ability to present complex oral and written statistical information, in a variety of easily understood formats to a variety of audiences
Good time management and prioritisation skills, demonstrated by the ability to use own initiative to manage a number of projects simultaneously, ensuring planning, organising and prioritising work load to meet project deadlines
Ability to analyse, interpret and synthesize complex information, including epidemiological data, from a number of sources using specialist software such as Excel, MapInfo, Stata, SPSS, R, and / or Power BI
