Job description

In Summary
Intrigued by technology and what it can do? And want to develop software that creates compelling customer experiences? If so, our Data Engineering pathway could be perfect for you!
Job Description
To say we're a data and tech driven business is an understatement. At Aviva, data is the lifeblood that drives our business forwards. We rely on data to solve problems, inform decisions, and create innovative solutions. With their invaluable ability to manage, clean, and structure data, it's small wonder that our talented Data Engineers are so highly prized around here.
If you're looking for practical experience in this area, that's exactly what our 12-month industry placement can offer. Along with a detailed insight into how you can make life easier for thousands of colleagues and 18 million customers.
And the great thing is, you don't need to be studying a tech or data-based subject to join us. As long as you have a love for technology, a talent for solving problems, and some kind of coding experience (SQL or Python preferable but not essential), we can teach you the rest.
What does it involve?
In a nutshell, our Data teams work with colleagues across our business to define and translate their requirements into data models that can be analysed or help with reporting. Within these teams, our Data Engineers design, build, and maintain the systems we use to collect, store, and analyse data using coding languages such as Python, Spark, and SQL.
Working with our Data Engineers, you'll learn the technical skills to create and maintain data components and pipelines as well as the basics, best practices, and importance of data modelling. Along with great problem-solving skills, your eye for detail and your ability to work both independently and collaboratively will be put to good use.
Over 12 months, you'll gain an immense breadth of experience and variety of skills. The work you do will be interesting and challenging. And you'll do it with the full support of our brilliant data and technology community.
Our placements are designed to provide a great foundation to our Graduate Programmes. Which means, after successful completion of your placement, you may be offered a permanent graduate role starting with us in 2026 (after you finish your studies).
What's in it for you?
  • A salary of £25,750 per annum
  • Valuable real-world experience to support your academic studies
  • Huge scope for on-the-job learning and other development opportunities
  • A chance to develop your skills working within expert teams
  • 25 days holiday, plus bank holidays per annum
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Discounts on all Aviva products
  • Eligible for a performance-related bonus
  • Flexible working and wellbeing support
  • The prospect of a permanent role when you finish your degree
What do we look for?
To be considered for our Data Engineering 12-month placement, you must be:
  • Studying for an undergraduate degree (in any subject)
  • On a course that supports a Placement Year
  • Available to work full-time (35 hours per week) from July 2024 to the end of June 2025
  • Intending to return to university for your final year of study at the end of the placement (graduating in Summer 2026)
You'll also need:
  • A genuine passion for technology, innovation, and continual improvement
  • Some previous coding experience or knowledge, either gained as part of your studies or self-taught as an outside passion (we'll ask you to complete a coding test as part of the selection process)
  • An analytical mind and talent for problem solving
  • An eagerness to question existing ways of doing things
  • A love of learning and the drive to keep developing yourself
Where will you be based?
This placement is based in Bristol and it's likely you'll balance time in the office with working from home. We call this smart working. Three days in the office and two days from home is a typical example, but that can vary. When you join us, your leader will discuss what works best for you, your team, and the business.
Smart working means you will need to live within commuting distance of Bristol or be prepared to relocate for the duration of your placement. That way, you will get to spend time with your team in person as well as virtually. It'll also help you access the support and networks that will help you succeed.
About Us
We're a leading international insurance, savings, retirement, and investment business. We're here to help our customers plan for the future and, when the worst happens, make things right.
You might be thinking that we're just another boring, corporate firm. But we don't all wear suits and shiny shoes here. We're proud to be different and just like our customers, our people are a diverse mix of cultures, genders, ages, perspectives, and ideas.
What's the application process?
Start by pressing 'apply' to be taken through to our online application.
There, you'll be asked to complete a short questionnaire about your motivations, and submit it along with a copy of your CV.
If you match our criteria (or get pretty close), we'll ask you to complete an online coding exercise along with our online Situational Strengths test.
Pass that and next will be a video interview.
The final stage is a virtual assessment day, with tasks that enable you to show us what you're good at and what you enjoy.
Impress us there and we'll offer you a role to start in July 2024.
Please note: Applications will close when we've received sufficient applications, so it's best to apply as early as you can.
Additional Information
Aviva is for everyone
We're an inclusive business and we're keen to attract applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Research tells us that women in particular will often rule themselves out if they feel they don't tick absolutely every box. But don't let that stop you. If you truly believe you have what it takes and can demonstrate as much during the recruitment process, we'd love to hear from you.
We interview every disabled applicant who meets the minimum criteria for the role. During your application, there will be an opportunity for you to send us an email stating that you have a disclosed disability.
Please submit your application online if you can. But if that presents a problem, just email avivaearlycareers@aviva.com and we'll arrange an alternative method.
