Data Science Computing Lab Manager
Salary from £50,606 to £58,505 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £65,157 inclusive of London
This is a fixed term appointment for 3 years with potential to extend subject to funding.
This is an exciting time to join the newly established Data Science Institute. Created in late 2020, the Data Science Institute (DSI) is a new academic entity of cross-disciplinary Institute status. The DSI’s mission is to bring LSE’s considerable expertise and knowledge to bear on the global Data Science debate, by both harnessing Data Science to know the causes of things and critically questioning Data Science developments and potential societal impacts, in an exciting new synthesis of Data Science and the broader social sciences.
A key role the DSI will play in facilitating Data Science at LSE is to support research computing, through a mixture of software, services, training, and infrastructure. The new Data Science Computing Lab (DASCL) will deliver these services to end users through a private cloud network as well as on-premises high-performance computing.
The Data Science Computing Lab Manager will set up and maintain the cloud service to ensure that infrastructure and tools for Data Science and research compute are provisioned and maintained to ensure that they keep pace with the demands of the School and the work. This role will involve working with the Data and Technology Services division (DTS) and the Digital Skills Lab to provide training, support, and user guides to users of the DASCL cloud services, as well as for other cloud computing services that might be managed by DTS. The postholder will work with the Library, administering data provision both in terms of requirements of third parties but also management related to long-term research work.
Candidates will have:
- Experience of cloud computing services, working with a variety of operating systems, database systems, and research computing languages.
- Experience with cloud computing, especially regarding Data Science research computing platforms.
- Evidence of a strong technical background relating to industry standard technology.
- Experience of liaising with third party vendors and support services to meet user requirements or resolve incidents.
- Knowledge of systems for the central deployment and management of research applications.
- Experience with revision control systems, i.e., GitHub.
- An understanding of and experience using database management systems.
- Excellent communication skills with a good command of the English language both orally and in writing.
- An ability to work with existing teams, and in the future within an expanded DASCL team as the Institute and its needs expand.
We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent training and development opportunities.
