Support Worker– Birchwood
Reports To: Deputy Manager/Registered Manager
Grade/ Salary: £23,175- £25,235 per annum FTE
Location: Birchwood@Kaleidoscope House, Broad Lane, Heswall, Wirral, CH60 9JY
Hours: 3x12.5 hour shifts
Day shifts, but may be required to cover night shifts.
Basic Purpose of Job:
To support Clinical/Therapeutic team in providing an effective rehabilitation service,
Engaging clients in decision making and behavioural change as well as supporting clients in successful completion of their programme.

Kaleidoscope is an innovative substance misuse treatment provider that delivers quality community and residential services across Wales and England.
Birchwood is our flagship residential treatment unit that provides evidenced-based and medically managed detoxification services to dependent alcohol and drug users. The unit has capacity for 20 bed spaces and provides both clinical and therapeutic treatment packages. Referrals are accepted from community drug and alcohol services across the UK
For alcohol dependence, Birchwood supports service users who are assessed as suitable for residential detoxification, providing a safe and supervised withdrawal from alcohol. Service users will be screened for clinical dependence in line with ICD-10 diagnostic criteria to assess suitability, using the Severity of Alcohol Dependence Questionnaire (SADQ).
For Opiate dependence, Birchwood supports service users who are assessed as suitable for residential detoxification using methadone and buprenorphine.
MAIN DUTIES:
OPERATIONAL:
1. To assist in the delivery of effective therapeutic group work programme and therapeutic interventions.
2. To ensure they are familiar with various issues relating to clients, by participating in handovers, accessing Theseus, using IT systems and liaising with managers and colleagues.
3. Maintain a visible presence throughout period of duty, being available for routine queries from clients.
4. To ensure clients have regular replenishments during COVID -19 isolation periods.
5. To welcome the client and complete the admission booking in process and risk management planning.
6. To undertake client facing support e.g. crisis /welfare interventions and supporting clients during periods of isolation.
7. To provide personal care to clients as and when required e.g. assistance with bathing, dressing, etc
8. Undertake drug testing of clients, if required; to complete any reports relating to drug testing and to inform relevant agencies accordingly.
9. To assist and support the nursing/therapeutic staff on duty, e,g, administering medications , clinical observations , case note recording and Covid-19 testing
10. To support clients to external appointments, e.g. doctors, dentist, court etc.
11. To undertake any practical tasks, cleaning/laundry etc that may be deemed necessary.
12. To identify issues of Child Protection that may arise as a result of contact with service users and notify Line Manager.
13. To adhere to the National Care Commission’s Minimum Standards for Care Homes.
14. To recognise and work within personal and professional boundaries.
15. To practise safe Infection Control standards, standard precautions include Hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, respiratory hygiene , safe disposal of PPE . Transmission based precautions are imperative.
HEALTH & SAFETY
1. To comply with health and safety policies and report all incidents and accidents to the Unit Manager or their representative.
2. Take reasonable care to prevent injury to themselves or others who may affected by acts of omission.
3. To ensure volunteers and contractors are made aware of Health & Safety issues when they come onto the premises.

- To ensure that all property belonging to Kaleidoscope is properly utilised
and cared for.

CORPORATE
1. To work as a member of the team to ensure high professional standards of care within Birchwood.
2. Attend and contribute to team/ staff meetings
- To adhere to the policies and procedures of Kaleidoscope, in particular Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities policies.
- To bring to the attention of the Line Manager areas of specific concern including those that may compromise you, your colleagues, the organisation or the safe and appropriate delivery of the service.
- To be responsible for the maintenance of quality standards as set by the agency.
- To undertake such training as the agency may require to maintain the delivery of quality services to clients.
- To perform any other duties as deemed appropriate by management.
It is essential that the post-holder establishes and maintains good working relationships with clients and undertakes working with clients in a friendly and approachable manner. Failure in this area is likely to cause the post-holder to be inappropriate for the work involved.
Although all staff are appointed to work in specific areas of Kaleidoscope it must be understood that all appointments are made to Kaleidoscope as a whole. In time of need, management are able to mobilise the staffing resource of Kaleidoscope to meet these needs.
The post holder will have responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable adults/ children (as appropriate) where the employee has responsibility or contact with the vulnerable person.
This post has been identified as requiring the post holder to provide evidence of BBV immunisation status in order to carry out the role effectively. The role may require the post holder to undertake Dry Blood Spot Testing/ Substance Misuse Testing/ Working in Needle Exchange or is a clinical role and therefore Kaleidoscope wishes to ensure that staff are not at risk of infection or transmission of a disease that may affect their own or patient safety. Staff will therefore need to evidence their immunisation history, exemption or non-responder on commencement of employment or at routine intervals at the request of the Organisation.
