Job Role:Deck Rating Apprentice Level 2
Location: Hull but based anywhere in England
Start date: September 2024


As an apprentice you will be working as directed by the Master / Chief Officer to maintain the vessel and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition, assisting in the safe and effective operation of the vessel whilst learning the roles and responsibilities of a Deck Rating in the Merchant Navy.


Passing this apprenticeship, including the mandatory qualifications and certification required, means the seafarer will be able to work on board any type and size of vessel in any part of the world.


Skills, experiences, qualifications, and competencies.

  • Ability to adopt a flexible working pattern including working on rostered shift patterns which includes unsociable hours.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Good level of IT skills
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • A flexible and committed approach to working within a small team that strives to provide a high-quality Marine service.

Entry requirements:

  • Driving Licence
  • 5x GCSEs including English and Maths L5
  • Must be physically fit and able to pass the ENG1 medical requirements
  • Work/study away from home

You will be required to attend Blackpool and Flyde College (Fleetwood)

Every apprentice without exception will need to pass strict medical requirements. This test includes, but is not limited to, severe deafness or difficulty communicating by radio or telephone, eyesight or colour vision that does not meet standards, and conditions that limit mobility and stamina.

Beyond this, individual employers will determine their own selection criteria but should satisfy themselves the apprentice can meet the vocational requirements of their apprenticeship.
