Are you an experienced technical theatre professional with a passion for lighting, sound, and AV services? We are seeking a Deputy Head of Lighting and Sound to join our dynamic team at Royal and Derngate.
In this role, you will lead a team of technicians, support the delivery of diverse productions, and oversee the maintenance of venue spaces and technical equipment. You'll have the opportunity to collaborate with the Head of Lighting and Sound and other departments, ensuring the highest technical standards are met.

Job PurposeTo provide technical theatre services for Royal and Derngate in the delivery of our received, produced, and creative learning programme with an emphasis on lighting, sound, and AV services.The upkeep of venue spaces and technical equipment.To deputise for the Head of Lighting and Sound (Royal).Key DutiesTo support the Head of Lighting and Sound in the general duties of the department and operation of Lighting, sound, and AV equipment and systems and to undertake additional technical duties as required.Under the direction of the Head of Lighting and Sound and Technical and Maintenance Manager, ensure that safe working practices are observed in line with the department's RAMS policy and procedures.To assist with show fit-ups and get-outs, and the running of rehearsals and performances, and to lead these sessions as required.To assist the Head of Lighting and Sound in the organisation and supervision of the Lighting and Sound department and to deputise for the Head of Lighting and Sound as required.To work as required across the venue spaces and, where necessary, associated spaces.To support and collaborate with Technical, Production, and Creative Learning departments.To support the management and organisation of the theatre's stores.Promote and provide excellent Customer Service.For the full job description for this Deputy Head of Lighting and Sound role, please see our website.
Essential SkillsExperience
Minimum of three years of professional industry experienceProven experience working in a technical role in a busy receiving house, production house, or large-scale touring experienceProven experience in managing full & part-time staffKnowledge/Qualifications
Understanding and commitment to live performanceKnowledge of Lighting and Sound equipment, networking, and consolesLighting/sound and/or AV equipment use and maintenanceEffects equipment use and maintenanceTheatre & licensing requirementsHealth & Safety at Work Act 1974 and other legislative requirementsLighting and Sound Board Programming & OperationSkills/Abilities
Computer literateExcellent organisational skillsExcellent communication skills, both oral and writtenGood people management skillsAbility to use access equipment and work at heightAbility to carry technical equipmentAbility to read and understand technical drawings and lighting plansFlexible approach to working hoursCalm under pressureCustomer-orientatedDesirable SkillsExperience
Proven experience at supervisory level in either Electrics or SoundWorking within a venue with a large and active education programmeProven experience in technical delivery of produced work in repertory theatreExperience in delivering large corporate eventsLighting and/or sound design experienceExperience of technical delivery in a medium to large performance spaceKnowledge/Qualifications
An understanding of subsidised/commercial theatre.C & G 236, or 1820; NVQ or other appropriate electrical qualificationFirst Aid at Work certificateFire Marshall trainingAnti-terrorism trainingElectrical qualification/experience working at component levelIOSH/ RAMS trainingOperational and maintenance experience in building plant and HVACStage, flying systems, and rigging techniquesRecognised relevant technical qualifications e.g. ABTTDriving LicenceSkills/Abilities
