Introduction

These roles are based in the Procedural Publishing Unit (PPU) a centre of publishing expertise specialising in publishing business-critical procedural and reporting material. The unit is responsible for ensuring the overnight, accurate, no-fail publishing of key documents (such as the Order Paper, Bill Amendments Publications and the Official Report) to very tight, overnight deadlines. The Unit publishes material for print and digital distribution.

The Role

As part of the PPU team these posts are responsible for ensuring on a shift basis the successful delivery of vital House of Commons documents, used in the Chamber and Committees.

It is expected there will need to be some understanding of digital publishing techniques and how the PPU team develops content and an understanding of procedural publications and their use and distribution.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

  • Ensuring with colleagues, on a daily basis that, all required documents and other material (eg data feeds) are, accurately and to agreed guidelines, published or sent on as necessary.
  • Ensuring PPU production work is efficient, including allocation of tasks and identifying and helping to resolve any system/software issues.
  • Ensuring PPU supports procedural specialists in identifying appropriate conventions and formats for material as necessary.
  • Working with colleagues to manage and resolve content development and workflow issues as necessary.

Skills and Experience

To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Experience of successfully managing and delivering publishing work, sometimes under significant pressure of time: including understanding content origination, development and publishing techniques as well as quality assurance methods.
  • Ability to use standard publishing software, particularly Adobe InDesign, as part of structured data workflow and ability to adapt quickly to understand new technology and systems.
  • Strong teamworking skills, including the ability to operate across team specialisms and collaborate effectively with external stakeholders, while upholding principles of diversity and inclusion.
