With 2000 seats The Sunderland Empire is the largest seated theatre between Edinburgh and Manchester. Opened by music hall superstar Vesta Tilly in 1907, the theatre has entertained millions of people in its history.
Over the years we have hosted the biggest West End musicals and featured an array of stars, while ensuring we continue to foster new talent and nurture those who will be the future of our creative industries with classes, recitals and community work all part of our DNA. This year we look forward to being the home of stellar shows such as Wicked, The Wizard of Oz, and Pretty Woman.
The Sunderland Empire is part of the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), the global leaders in live entertainment. ATG owns and operates over 80 venues worldwide, is an internationally recognised and award-winning producer and operates a market leading theatre ticketing business.
Sunderland is undergoing a cultural transformation, with new venues, new business investments and new residential developments all underway in the city. Over £500m of projects are already under construction in the city centre, with our theatre as the cultural cornerstone.
The Deputy Technical & Building Manager’s Role
This is a very exciting opportunity for the right individual to join and assist in leading the Technical Team at the Sunderland Empire Theatre. Reporting to the Technical and Buildings Manager you will play a key role in ensuring our standards of presentation, both on stage and in the rest of the building, are exemplary. You will assist in the leadership and delivery of the technical, maintenance, stage door and backstage operations and teams.
You will be expected to have extensive management experience to lead, develop and grow a technical team with many years of experience, you will work closely with colleagues in lighting, stage management, building maintenance and FOH operations.
The role is offered on an annualised hours, (buy-out) basis, meaning that working hours may vary throughout the year and payment for any premium hours, such as get outs, are all included in the annual salary. The role will be subject to a 6 month satisfactory probation period. The role also involves regular evening and weekend work as well as get-ins and get-outs as appropriate.
