Reporting to a Senior Project Manager, the Design Manager will be responsible for managing and co-ordinating designs for our various sized commercial and retail projects of a construction and refurbishment nature for values between £10,000 and £1.5m.
The primary role of the Design Manager will be to work closely with the Project Managers, discuss the designs with Architects, Structural, Civil & Services Engineers and Principle Designers managing the design programme, information release schedules and technical submissions. Working collaboratively with our teams to ensure the design develops in accordance with the brief and with a direct focus on the projects running efficiently, profitably and ensuring full compliance to Health & Safety legislation and contract conditions.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Managing the design processes involved in a construction project
To be competent in the understanding of the contract design and construction drawings
Ensuring that drawings completed and reviewed in a timely manner
Liaising with clients on design-related matters, chairing design meetings, writing reports and giving presentations
Establishing and maintaining effective methods of communication between the teams involved in design work throughout the project
Preparing and maintaining records and documents throughout the project
Assessing, mitigating and managing risks connected with design with the ability to identify and resolve design clashes
Ensuring designs and design work meets health and safety legislation, sustainable building standards (such as BREEAM – the Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) and industry codes of practice
Understanding RIBA stages of work
Adept at using contemporary design software and regular use of our bespoke computer system and other software packages
Managing specialist domestic and nominated sub-contractors in respect to design
Produce and manage technical submissions.
Enforcing and monitoring Health & Safety practices and CDM Regulations on site.
Attendance of regular site meetings with client, Architect, Quantity Surveyor, Planning Supervisor etc.
Attendance of regular report and update meetings with Senior Management.
Overseeing, managing and the development of relevant trainee’s or assistant’s within your department
To identify and implement improvements to any aspect of the service that we provide
Ensuring that exceptional levels of client satisfaction is provided at all times
We undertake contracts and projects for varied companies that require our employees to undertake clearances along with an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service clearance
This is a full time position and hours of work will be 42 hours per week. 07:45hrs to 17:15hrs Monday – Thursday
07:45hrs to 16:45hrs Friday
The Design Manager would generally divide their time between their office and construction sites therefore, working hours may vary. This will also involve daily travel and possible working away from time to time as deemed necessary for the needs of the business.
Person Specification Essential Requirements
- Degree (or higher) in a relevant subject such as Architecture, Architectural Technology, Construction Management, Design Management
- Experience of working within a similar environment including commercial awareness
- Excellent design and technical skills
- Competent at using contemporary design software and other software packages
- Exceptional attention to detail, organisational and time management skills
- Proficient in Health & Safety legislation and compliance
- High quality problem solving, negotiating and creative thinking skills
- Enthusiasm to continue to learn throughout your career, including topics such as legislation and sustainability guidelines
- Skilled in leadership and relationship-building with both internal and external stakeholders
- Self-motivated and proactive
- Positive attitude and the ability to integrate and be an active part in the team
- You must hold a full current UK driving licence and have had 6 months driving experience since passing your test
