DevOps Engineer Higher Apprenticeship

The Met Office is delighted to open our advertising for a number of apprenticeships, which will commence in September 2024.

The Met Office is recruiting for 2, Level 4 DevOps Engineer apprentices in Exeter.

As our Level 4 DevOps Apprenticeship, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week.

As our DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship Level 4, your starting salary will be £22911.00 and you will have the opportunity to progress to £24259.00 over time.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £32339.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Whilst this is a temporary position for up to 19 months, there is potential for it to develop into a permanent position on successful completion of your apprenticeship. Digital apprentices are key to our future resourcing strategy providing an opportunity to train and develop in a professional and supportive environment with a view to undertaking a career in IT, within the Met Office

Job Purpose: 

We would look for you to join us in September 2024 with your apprenticeship training beginning shortly afterwards. You would have 1 day per week dedicated to your 20% off the job training.

Working towards the level 4 DevOps Engineer standard apprenticeship, the training will be delivered as effectively as possible for your learning style possibly including online as well as self-study, so candidates need to have a passion for their own development as well as be committed to the training and opportunities available.

You will be managed by one line manager and have one mentor to offer further support. In addition to the formal training with a registered training provider, you will also have in house training and on the job experience.

You will have the opportunity to work with a team on activities related to your study, allowing you to develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours in this occupation whilst contributing to Met Office aims.

The MetDB (Meteorological Database) team support and maintain a system for storing weather data, developed using Fortran and C alongside some Python scripts. These data are stored and made available on request for many of the Met Office data processing systems, resulting in products and services to the public and our customers.

As an apprentice DevOps Engineer MetDB team, your key responsibilities are:

  • Work as part of the team, to ensure that our service delivery targets are achieved.
  • Monitoring the system and providing solutions to any identified issues.
  • Working alongside other Met Office teams to help support and improve the service.
  • Developing solutions to allow storage and retrieval of data for Met Office systems, which require access to this weather information.

6.Essential Level 3 Qualification in a related subject (apprenticeship/A levels/BTEC etc) OR equivalent work experience (successful completion of QA Aptitude test required if it’s non-standard entry i.e. through work experience rather than STEM qualifications)

Not be enrolled on another funded apprenticeship or another funded further education or higher education programme at the time you start this apprenticeship.
