Director, FP&A
General Summary:
The Director OpEx, FP&A is the Operating Expense lead for Vertex's International. Leading the OpEx Business partnering organization for a sizeable business, the position provides strategic insight and financial direction to the Senior Intentional leaders including eleven senior executives across diverse functional groups.
The lead for FP&A OpEx is a highly visible role across the International organization. The main responsibility of this role is to lead a strong and insightful planning process. By utilizing our data-rich environment, the role will identify key value drivers and Business KPIs, providing clear and actionable output. Additionally, the role will ensure that management reporting and risk management plans accurately reflect our fast-paced evolution.
The incumbent will play a crucial role in providing valuable insights and recommendations to international and global leaders. By cultivating a culture of data-driven decision-making and scenario planning, the role will navigate a complex multi-dimensional environment that includes seven disease areas, eleven functional groups, and three distinct regional structures. Through this analysis, the role will identify opportunities for investment and cost efficiencies, enabling the organization to make informed decisions and drive financial success.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Helps the International Finance Leadership team shape and deliver strategic financial management on significant OpEx Budget to functional leaders through effective stakeholder management at all levels of the business.
- Delivers valuable insight to strengthen strategic decision-making, including but not limited to opportunities to invest, cost efficiencies and mitigation of risks, working with leadership teams to ensure an enterprise viewpoint.
- Leads the near term OPEX financial planning process for International (budget, quarterly forecast) to provide meaningful forward-looking projections, developing key scenarios and to identify key risks/uncertainties including plans for potential mitigation.
- Key contributor to development of Long-Range Plan with a 10-year horizon. This plan serves as a strategic outline across all International markets that aligns future requirements with revenue growth scenarios, ensuring that the investment profile supports corporate goals.
- Considering various financial projections and analysing market trends, the role will provide a roadmap for the organization's financial planning and ensure that resources are allocated in a manner that supports sustainable growth and success.
- Leads financial performance management process for areas of responsibility, with a focus on understanding the key drivers of short-term performance and communicating the range of possible outcomes.
- Responsible for monthly consolidation & reporting of total International OPEX to Intl CFO/CEO and Global Functional Finance teams (Commercial, R&D, G&A). Ensuring commentary tells a cohesive story to management about key risks and opportunities across organisation.
- Manages and leads a team of four Finance Business Partners ensuring coherent OPEX financial analysis and alignment with relevant stakeholders. Responsible for technical training and development of Business Partners, empowering the team to improve on the existing business insight.
- Works with International Finance leadership to decide and deliver on departmental priorities, maximising impact of available resources.
- Actively collaborates with cross functional partners in Global FP&A, accounting, GIS, HR and other functions to ensure clarity of ownership and accountability over deliverables so that department services are delivered seamlessly to the business.
- Advocate of continuous improvement mindset with review of key processes to identify areas of improvement/efficiency and lead implementation. Works closely with our Global teams to ensure International alignment and input to Global process and system improvements via Global Process Excellence team.
- Ensures that financial integrity, robust corporate governance, and compliance requirements are applied correctly and consistently within areas of responsibility.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience in pharmaceutical industry, business partnering with an executive team.
- Strong skills demonstrated in MS Office and financial software applications, including Hyperion & Power BI.
- Strong communication, influencing and interpersonal skills necessary for daily interaction with senior management, as well as business partners and peers within Finance.
- Continuous improvement mindset, comfortable guiding cross-functional initiatives without direct management authority, working with complex systems and tight deadlines across multiple time zones.
- Demonstrable experience managing within a highly matrixed environment. Able to influence without authority and collaborate with colleagues at various levels across multiple geographies.
- Demonstrable analytical and financial skills to evaluate a broad range of financial questions; particularly portfolio analysis, valuation, ROI, and complex business questions.
- Understands how meeting department goals contributes to the overall attainment of financial goals and is accountable for achievement of agreed targets; uses data and acquired knowledge to influence key stakeholders to take appropriate decisions.
- Demonstrable experience of managing and developing a team of finance professionals.
Education and Experience:
- CIMA/ACA/ACCA or other relevant professional qualification or experience
- Typically requires significant years’ experience in a finance managerial role demonstrating strong technical and analytical skills and a track record of success working in a team-based environment.
