About us

UCL is a world leading, global top 10 university. Made up of 11 faculties and additional central professional services teams, we employ 17,000 people to deliver groundbreaking research and exceptional teaching.

UCL has recently laid out its approach to transformational change, following a significant period of engagement and consultation, to ensure the organization is fit for the future against a background of financial, sector and geo-political challenges - not just to UCL but more broadly for higher education. We have also laid out what is most important to us in the prioristisation of our resources; helping to solve the problems that will make the most difference to our world. This will enable us to deliver on our academic mission of research and teaching excellence, as befits one of the world’s best universities. The full detail of the plan can be found here.

About the role

UCL is currently looking to appoint 2 Directors of Operations (DoO's) to support either the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences or the Faculty of Medical Sciences. These senior leadership appointments will report to and be a trusted advisor of the Dean of the Faculty. They are responsible for creating the right operational environment to empower our academics to deliver research and teaching. These roles are pivotal role in shaping the operational landscape, ensuring alignment of resources, processes and technology to support the faculty’s objectives. The Director of Operations has four core responsibilities:

  • Leading the professional services/operational teams within the faculty
  • Working with the Dean, Academic Heads of Department, Departmental Managers and faculty colleagues to ensure the faculty is financially and operationally sustainable
  • Championing and delivering meaningful and beneficial change to support faculty and organisational objectives
  • Representing the Departments and Faculties in organisational wide decision making

They will also take part in and represent the faculty in cross faculty and University wide initiatives requiring senior input and presence, such as committees, boards and internal and external events. Additionally, the DoO will have faculty specific initiatives that they will be responsible for leading some of which can be found in Appendix 1 - Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences and Appendix 2 - Faculty of Medical Sciences

About you

You will be a driven and ambitious strategic operations leader with a track record of delivery with impact gained in complex, matrix organisations. You will have the ability to move projects forward, combined with an aptitude for energising cohesive teams to deliver UCL's strategic and operational goals. Your strong commercial acumen and enabling approach will cut through challenges to achieve business objectives. You will also possess excellent communication and influencing skills including the ability to champion the collegiality UCL values, and advocate well.
