Start date: September 2024

Looking to apply your academic knowledge in a business context?
Why this job matters
Are you a recent graduate or due to graduate in 2024? Do you already have some work experience and want to develop your skills in a technical role starting in September 2024? Kickstart your career within BT Business.
BT Group's work in cyber security has an impact all over the world and for all types of business customers big and small. Our partners rely on us to keep them safe, which is where you come in.
You'll join our expert team of experienced Security Professionals, so you can learn directly from the best. You'll help to provide technical support on complex network security and cyber security deployments for our UK secure contracts. Working across a variety of different platforms and technologies, including Data Centre Servers, Networking and Cloud based tools, you'll develop a wide range of skills and experience.
This role is vital in delivering a best-in-class customer service experience to all of our clients. The security team makes sure appropriate actions are taken to reduce the risk of incidents and maintain services, to avoid any impact to the customer's set up.
It's a job that involves a lot of teamwork; everyone relies on and helps each other to do the best job possible for our business customers. You'll have a lot going on at once and can be managing lots of complex workloads and competing priorities. But we'll work with you to make sure you can manage it.
What you'll be doing
You'll be joining a security team that supports our government customers and you will develop your career pathway within a diverse and multi-disciplinary Engineering team, broadening your skills in Cyber Processing that can help us counter Cyber Security threats to our network or help us localise network problems.
What you'll do:
  • Be hands on in all aspects of the design, build, deployment and support of customer facing networks.
  • Maintain monitoring and observability solutions to provide excellent service via our networks and applications.
  • Employ and adapt industry-leading techniques and best practices to suit security challenges.
You'll definitely:
  • Have Linux knowledge to deliver administrative expertise on servers.
  • Grow your experience of integrating networks and network management software in on-premise environments.
  • Have experience in designing, building and providing third-line support for complex IP networks, that are secure, scalable, resilient, and give high performance.
  • Have knowledge of network design for security, including firewall, IDS and IPS experience.
  • Deliver, coordinate and prioritize activities, responding positively to challenges, using your technical expertise to support you and those around you.
  • Be a collaborative partner, developing great working relationships with stakeholders, sharing knowledge and collaborating.
You might even:
  • Know how to use and have experience with LAN switching in small- and medium-scale data centre and enterprise environments, maybe including experience with RSTP/MSTP, LAG, MC-LAG or SPB and first-hop resilience and security protocols.
  • Have experience with and knowledge of enterprise and operator-scale routing design using protocols such as OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, LDP or RSVP.
  • Have exposure to Software Defined Networking principles, ideally with VMware NSX.
  • Have experience of automation approaches, ideally with exposure to Infrastructure-as-Code tooling such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Terraform. Transferable experience with Cisco DNA is also welcomed.
I had a really positive experience during my CyberFirst summer placement at BT, so after graduating university, I chose to take up a permanent position in September 2022. I've been continuously proud to work with people who believe in the CyberFirst ethos, and who especially see the value of bringing more women in to cyber. BT maintains a culture of listening to and valuing all its employees and their contributions; within my first year of BT I have been given the trust and authority to lead on a sizeable subsection of my project.
My project team have been really open to me suggesting new ways of working and trying new initiatives. I really appreciate the opportunity I have to work for various government customers, and I think the work that all the project teams do here is genuinely invaluable.
The skills & experience you'll need
The role is also subject to you gaining and keeping the necessary level of security clearance needed to undertake your work. The result of the security clearance vetting is not subject to appeal. Failure to successfully achieve and maintain the necessary level of security clearance may see any offer of employment with BT cease or withdrawn.
We will also be looking for the following:
• A 2.2 degree or higher in a relevant STEM subject.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Strong IT skills.
• The ability to simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
Desired but not essential:
• Knowledge or experience of contact centre, video, collaboration, or voice technologies.
Due to the sensitive nature of this role you will be required to have DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance ( https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum will be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.
