Job description

Cranleigh STEM is working with a leading Oxford spin-out, dedicated to harnessing cutting-edge surface chemistry for sustainable applications in the future. By utilising their advanced technology, they can manipulate surface behaviour, fundamentally transforming the functionality of diverse products and technologies.

We are looking for a PhD-educated electrochemist to join their dynamic, innovative team.

You'll play a crucial role in the research and development team, actively contributing to the creation of innovative products in the clean technology sector.

Role: R&D Electrochemist
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000
Benefits: 25 days annual leave, in addition to statutory Bank Holidays, Enhanced pension scheme, and Professional development support.
Location: Oxford

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create electrochemical testing procedures to assess innovative membrane materials.
  • Perform electrochemical tests on novel membrane materials, comparing them to leading commercial materials.
  • Collaborate with management to improve in-house testing capabilities by identifying and implementing new equipment and processes.
  • Coordinate with external partners for collaboration or outsourcing of testing activities.
  • Collaborate with the R&D team on new product development and research initiatives.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or an equivalent qualification, accompanied by a 3-year track record in the industry, or alternatively, a Ph.D. in chemistry.
  • Proficient hands-on experience in devising, executing, and comprehending electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
  • Demonstrable practical expertise in electrochemical testing and the ability to interpret corresponding results.
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to a dynamic, early-stage startup environment focusing on swift product delivery to market.
  • Capability to autonomously plan and oversee personal work streams while fostering effective collaboration within a team.
  • Strong attention to detail, a proactive approach to learning, and adept prioritisation of tasks.
  • Effective verbal communication skills, complemented by excellent writing and reporting capabilities.

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in materials chemistry.
  • Expertise in handling and testing battery separators or ion exchange membranes.
  • Familiarity with electrolysers, fuel cells, or batteries.
  • Proven track record of successfully bringing a new product to market, particularly in the clean technology sector.
  • Understanding of mechanical testing, thermal analysis, spectroscopy, and microscopy techniques.
