Salary banding for this role is between £65,000 and £75,000 plus benefits

The opportunity in front of you will see you coming in to lead a mature Platform Operations team responsible for holding up Tesco Bank’s AWS environment, which at last count holds over 80% of the bank! You will share responsibility with the rest of the team to help maintain and develop our services and capabilities to get the best out of AWS and help our internal customers excel – having others succeed is what we wake up for.

Platform Engineering’s aim and focus is

• To provide high quality service to customers/tenants of our core platforms
• Enable our customers to deliver great products to the end customer though simple, scalable, and consistent technology building blocks.
• We have automation at out our core, and we understand the power or orchestration to make us and our customers better and move faster.
• Support customers new to AWS to meet best practice standards built upon a strong foundation of cloud enabled technologies to achieve the value you know they can.
• Work with our more mature customers to break new ground in the bank and truly leverage cloud native technologies.

The Role

This role will be focused on leading a team of system engineers to automate the building, maintenance, operation, and support of a range of custom services built on top of AWS.

• You will contribute to the delicate balance between protecting the bank through clear and conscious management and control of AWS services whilst removing as much friction and as many blockers as possible for teams to develop new and enhanced services for customers.
• You will co-ordinate all activity within your team, devise and implement complex solutions, promote, implement, and collaborate to evolve our practice standards and patterns, and act as a subject matter expert with architecture and customer product teams.

• As an Engineering Lead, the team will look to you to set a direction and drive through service improvements, features and change. You will work closely with all engineers on your team from seniors to juniors, mentoring and building their careers, and will influence and work closely with our principal engineers on our longer-term technology goals.

Essential criteria – the technical ‘must have’s’

• Core tech stack – Python, Ansible, AWS SAM, Jenkins, Terraform

• Strong hands-on experience with managing AWS at scale and operating services and systems at a broad platform level
• Track record of scoping, developing, and delivering custom capabilities/functions to allow other teams to meet standards and operate in the cloud within a highly regulated context.
• Management of a diverse team of varying levels of technical capability across a wide range of technology areas
• Experience working in an Agile methodology, ideally SAFe – this role contains elements of Product Ownership (backlog refinement, stakeholder management, product/engineering certification and sign off etc)

Desirable – the ‘good to have’ skills.

• Experience in managing and governing technical controls in a highly regulated environment and experience in dashboarding and reporting on the key metrics to demonstrate the compliance position.
• Ability to adapt – operations in the bank can often be the first port of call for issue resolution and response, and regularly called upon to provide our expertise to support product and feature teams.
