We have been appointed by Westminster Abbey as the exclusive search partner for the appointment of the Environment and Sustainability Manager.
This is a new and exciting role, following the Board’s recent commitment to a substantial long-term work programme to make radical improvements in the environmental footprint and Sustainability profile of the Abbey. This will include comprehensive action to minimise the Abbey’s carbon footprint as well as wider initiatives to promote water conservation, waste reduction, recycling, sustainable procurement and ethical supply chain management.
This is an incredible opportunity for an Environment and Sustainability expert who wants the autonomy to drive impactful change within a largely medieval estate, a World Heritage Site and a multi-faceted site that includes all kinds of beautiful space for visitors, events, offices, and residents. The Abbey is a unique place with a unique set of challenges and opportunities within its environment.
Role Responsibilities
To coordinate our work on this exciting agenda, the Abbey is now seeking to recruit an individual who has an active interest in these issues, shares their commitment and sense of urgency in tackling them, and can demonstrate the expertise, energy and imagination to coordinate this important work across the Abbey’s professional teams.
As the Environment and Sustainability Manager, you will support the Board in ensuring that the strategies and plans keep pace with a rapidly changing landscape in terms of technology and national infrastructure. You will build partnerships with external experts, innovators and key stakeholders within the Abbey to ensure that these plans are delivered successfully. You will also act as a champion for action on the Environment and Sustainability within the organisation, developing and facilitating a network of staff to work together on this and develop new solutions.
To succeed in this role, you will need to be an experienced project manager, an effective communicator, a natural team player and an excellent advisor. You will have strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and emotional intelligence, and an affinity for the mission of a church with a thousand-year history and a central role in the life of the Nation and Commonwealth.
A successful candidate will have:
* Proven and lengthy experience successfully executing Environment and Sustainability projects
* Strong understanding of sustainability issues and emerging solutions relevant to the Abbey, with its concentration of historic buildings
* Strong analytical capability to assess the performance and value for money of proposed actions under the strategy
* Excellent communication skills and ability to articulate to multiple stakeholders
* A diplomatic individual with the ability to independently lead on the Environment and Sustainability strategy
