The Role
This post is commissioned and funded by the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT), established in Los Angeles and now expanding into Oxford.
EIT is expanding upon its existing collaborations with the University of Oxford by building a 320,000 square feet research institute and medical clinic in the nearby Oxford Science Park. In addition to this investment, EIT will fund approximately 20 scholarships each year for the world's best global innovators, offering fully-funded study at the University of Oxford, and cutting-edge programming and innovation opportunities with world experts in Oxford, LA and beyond.
In this new position the E, H & S Officer will ensure all EIT Oxford sites are compliant with all applicable safety regulations and environmental regulations including the creation of relevant procedures and standards. Work with EIT management to ensure all workers are aware of potential hazards in the workplace and environment and take steps to mitigate any risks to an acceptable level. It is important that the level of mitigation and controls are set at a balanced level that considers both statutory obligations and commercial objectives. The E, H & S Officer will also have ultimate responsibility of compliance related matters.
Hours of work will generally be Monday to Friday, core hours 08:30-17:30 and will be office/site based. However due to the nature of the role and organisation there may be times where flexibility is required during the evening and occasionally weekends to accommodate interaction with EIT Los Angeles.

Responsibilities
May include some or all the following responsibilities:
- Identify applicable safety and environmental standards for EIT,
- Identify applicable compliance standards for EIT, and control the route to compliance,
- Identify and develop safety plans and risk assessments,
- Develop and control a permit to work system,
- Conducting safety audits,
- Review plans during the design and construction phases of projects to build in safety and environmental compliance,
- Training EIT on the safety procedures and processes,
- Investigation of accidents, incidents and near misses to ensure learnings are put in place with appropriate countermeasures and shared with the wider organisation,
- Support other business functions and other departments,
- Ensure the safety and environmental journey is communicated to all key stakeholders, as required.
Any other tasks or responsibilities assigned that are deemed reasonable and in scope of the role.

Will undertake and be accountable for activities affecting external personnel and will involve some complex communications. Examples may include, Public, Landlords, Estate Management, Contractors, Consultants, Statutory Bodies, Regulatory Agencies, Local Authorities, Legal Advisors or Solicitors.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- IOSH training minimum,
- Experience working as an environmental, Health and Safety professional in a Biotech, Pharma, Clinic, or similar environment,
- Excellent Communication Skills, both written and verbal English,
- CDM experience “client side” EHS/Compliance duties would be advantageous.
- Environmental Management.
- Compliance Experience.
Terms of Appointment
- You must be eligible to work in the UK with a willingness to travel as necessary.
- You must be based in, or within easy commuting distance of, Oxford.
- During peak periods, some longer hours may be required and some working across multiple time zones due to the global nature of the programme.
