Job description

The Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Manchester offers an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join the Planning, Compliance and Special Projects team as the Faculty Safety, Compliance and Risk Manager. This is a high profile role overseeing the Faculty’s Safety and Compliance team, within a Faculty comparable in scale to a medium-sized UK university.

About Us

The University of Manchester is a truly global institution, with a reputation for education and innovation that resonates across the world. Global rankings place Manchester as the 28th best university in the world (QS University World Rankings, 2023) and 6th in the UK (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2023).

The University is divided into three Faculties, each equivalent in size to a medium-sized UK university: the Faculty of Science and Engineering has an annual income of over £250 million, over 2,500 members of staff, and 12,000 students. The size and scale of the University means we can offer unparalleled opportunities for interdisciplinary ventures and collaborative working, enabling our staff and students to achieve great things.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers a wide range of professionally accredited taught and research programmes of study. The breadth and international quality of our science and engineering research expertise enables us to directly address critical challenges facing humankind and advance understanding. Our facilities extend beyond our city centre campus and include Jodrell Bank Observatory, Dalton Nuclear Institute in Cumbria, and Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire. In 2021 we completed construction of the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD), the largest home for engineering in any UK university.

About the Role

We are looking for an excellent safety practitioner and collaborative team leader, with significant experience managing health, safety and compliance in a similarly complex environment, to join our Planning, Compliance and Special Projects (PCSP) team.

The successful candidate will provide support, guidance and assurance to the Vice-President and Dean, Director of Faculty Operations and Head of Planning, Compliance and Special Projects and extended Faculty Leadership Team, working in partnership with academic and professional services colleagues to ensure an embedded safety culture with robust risk management.

Working with colleagues in networks across the University, the postholder will be adept in interpreting regulations, data and information, and be experienced in implementing safety and compliance related continuous improvement initiatives.

As part of the PCSP Management Team you will provide leadership to a dynamic, highly motivated team, demonstrating a firm commitment to individual and team development.

What can you expect in return

The University will actively foster a culture of inclusion and diversity and will seek to achieve true equality of opportunity for all members of its community.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
