Department: Diabetic Eye Screening Service

Band 5 £28,407 - £34,581 Per annum

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for a 12-month maternity cover position as a Failsafe Officer in our Diabetic Eye Screening Service. This role is perfect for someone with experience in diabetic eye screening who is looking to step into a more senior role and take on additional responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of sight loss in the working age population. The condition is caused when diabetes affects the small blood vessels in the retina, the part of the eye that acts rather like the film in a camera. The NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programme aims to reduce the risk of sight loss among people with diabetes by the early detection and treatment, if needed, of diabetic retinopathy

This role will ensure that all patients requiring treatment and further intervention receives timely appointments as well as investigating any reasons why patients have not attended.  In addition to this, the successful candidate will give arbitration level grading to around 2000 patients.

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Educated to A level standard or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma in City and Guilds level three in Diabetic Eye Screening
  • To be able to grade retinal images, primary, secondary and arbitration level.

Experience

Desirable criteria
  • Thorough understanding of screening pathway
  • Significant knowledge of diabetic eye disease and failsafe processes
  • Knowledge and understanding of key NHS issues including national and local policy drivers
  • Knowledge of current NHS Agenda
