Overview of Role

The Mountbatten Group is a dynamic organisation and the Financial Accountant is responsible for ensuring its financial processes keep pace with the development of the group and support organisational changes that improve our strategic decision making.

Location: Mountbatten Hampshire and Mountbatten Isle of Wight (split two days / three days across each location each week dependent on business needs)

The Financial Accountant is the technical leader responsible for financial accounting, and day to day transactional finance. The postholder will report directly to the Director of Finance, and provide financial reports and analysis as required along with being responsible for:

Contributing to corporate decision making by providing financial expertise and support across the Mountbatten Group at all levels of the group

Training and coaching finance colleagues and wider teams across Mountbatten on financial processes

Main duties of the job

Lead financial accounting, day to day transactional finance and proactively supporting the Director of Finance and working to ensure our finances are well governed, transparent, mission-aligned and managed efficiently.

The Mountbatten Group is a dynamic organisation and the Financial Accountant is responsible for ensuring it’s financial processes keep pace with the development of the group and support organisational changes that improve our strategic decision making.

Key Tasks

Lead financial accounting, day to day transactional finance and proactively supporting the Director of Finance and working to ensure our finances are well governed, transparent, mission-aligned and managed efficiently.

Financial Management and Systems:

•        Lead the financial accounting function ensuring the accurate and timely completion of day to day, month end and annual processes in line with the month end Finance Calendar, to include:

•       Balance Sheet Reconciliations

•       Fixed Asset Registers reconciled to finance system

•       Restricted Funds are correctly allocated as received/expense incurred

•       Process the Payroll journals for employing organisations from information obtained from the outsourced provider

•       Ensure VAT returns are completed timely and accurately, reviewing prior to submission to HMRC for all organisations

•       Ensure continuous improvement environment for Finance processes, identifying and recommending improvements

•       Ensure all Fundraising monies are counted within 2 working days of receipt using Finance Volunteers as required reporting counted amounts to Fundraising by the end of the 2nd working day

•       Analysis and reporting as requested by the Director of Finance

•       Ensure regular and adhoc payments are made timely following Mountbatten policies to ensure management of working capital and maintenance of stakeholder relationships

•        Support projects to source and implement new systems as required, including engagement and project management of non-finance employees

•        Ensure finance manual and related policies and procedures are up to date, relevant, and compliant with external statutory standards (e.g., HMRC for expenses), and ensure that employees are adequately trained and supported to ensure internal compliance

•        Complete all necessary annual HMRC returns in relation to employee benefits, required under the PAYE Settlement Agreements for both organisations

Financial Training and Coaching

•        Take a lead role in rolling out training, communicating, influencing and persuading all staff in the expectations in the use of financial processes, and providing ad hoc training and support as needed to ensure compliant and effective use of systems 

Regulatory and Statutory Reporting

•        Ensure VAT, corporation and other tax compliance.

•        Liaise with auditors for the annual audit

Payroll and Employee Benefits

•        Working collaboratively with the People Services Team to support all aspects of payroll and employee benefits administration

•        Ensuring prompt, accurate, compliant payments and processes and clear professional communications with the teams, both internally and externally to Mountbatten in relation to payroll and employee benefits

•        Responsible for the monthly reconciliation of all salary payments made by the designated payroll provider, ensuring that timely information is shared with People Services in relation to salary sacrifice schemes to enable the payroll provider to reflect this in employees salaries on a monthly basis

Key Relationships

·         All internal levels of the organisation in relation to providing Financial Information as required 

Other Responsibilities

·           Ensure appropriate processes are in place to enable the finance team to comply with its obligations under the Data Protection Act
