Job description

Region: South East Scotland or South West Scotland (negotiable)

Base: Hybrid working model (office and home based)

Salary: £32,886-£35,369 (Salary band 33-36)

Hours: 36 hours, full time (job share will be considered)

Are you an experienced Financial Wellbeing advisor who has a passion to improve the quality of life and experience of those living with a neurological condition? This rewarding role offers the opportunity to work directly with families, share your expertise, and develop your skills while leading a high performing team in support the Huntington’s disease community.

Our Financial Wellbeing Service delivers bespoke advice across a range of money topics to clients living with Huntington’s disease across Scotland and has delivered more than £6million in financial gain for families since 2015.

About the role

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and motivated to have a positive influence on the quality of life for individuals and their families impacted by Huntington’s disease (HD) by managing and delivering a high quality Financial Wellbeing and energy advice service. As Financial Wellbeing Service Lead you will ideally have experience in service management as well as mentoring and supporting others in the advice sector. We expect you to have considerable expertise in delivering advice to vulnerable groups across at least two out of our four main advice areas – welfare rights; debt advice; energy advice; financial planning and products - and be willing to learn in any area where you have less experience. The successful candidate should be able to work flexibly and autonomously using their own initiative. Strong leadership and good listening, communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as are excellent organisation and caseload management. The post holder will have high attention to detail and able to work collaboratively with a wide range of professionals to provide a unique, high quality service to families.

You will play a key role in the mission of Scottish Huntington’s Association as a member of our Extended Leadership Team and work with multiple stakeholders including Huntington’s Disease (HD) Specialists, the Youth Service and other appropriate agencies to deliver an effective service to families impacted by Huntington’s disease. You will be responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the Financial Wellbeing Service providing leadership, support and supervision to team members, effective management of budgets, co-ordinating with the Income Generation team to provide service information to assist with service funding applications, and liaising with funders where appropriate.

The successful candidate will also have a caseload and work directly with families, delivering a holistic advice service in South East Scotland that provides advice, information and support on a range of money issues; accessing welfare benefits, debt, planning for the future and energy advice.

About us

People impacted by Huntington’s disease need specialist services to cope with a severe and complex disease, the impact on families and a lack of awareness amongst health and social care providers and the wider public.

Scottish Huntington’s Association is the only charity in the country exclusively dedicated to providing expert and personalised support for those impacted by Huntington’s disease.

Our personalised support reduces unnecessary hospital admissions; supports carers and other family members; lowers household poverty; and alleviates wellbeing risks to children and young people living in Huntington’s families.

The successful candidate will join Scottish Huntington’s Association at an exciting time with the launch of Standing Tall: A Strategy for Growth 2023 – 28 to transform the care and support for Huntington’s families throughout Scotland. We are an ambitious and hard-working organisation, recognised at national and international levels for our expertise and approach.

About Huntington’s disease

Huntington’s disease is caused by an inherited faulty gene that damages the brain over time. People with the disease can eventually lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink and care for themselves, requiring specialist support from those who understand the condition.

The disease is genetic, meaning it is passed down from one generation to the next. It therefore impacts entire families over generations rather than individuals alone. Anyone with a parent who has Huntington’s has a 50% risk of inheriting the condition from them.

Generally speaking, symptoms begin to develop between the ages of 30 and 50 and can take between 10 and 25 years from starting until the end of life. However, each case of Huntington’s is unique and can vary dramatically both in terms of age of onset, speed of advance and range of symptoms.

Around 800 people in Scotland are living with the symptoms of Huntington’s disease right now. A further 3,200 are estimated to be at risk of developing Huntington’s disease as a result of inheriting the faulty gene.
