What will the successful candidate be doing?

We are looking for Fire Protection Specialists to join a dynamic team of safety experts, providing professional Fire Protection advice and support at a tactical level to facility owners/managers. The role of the team is to support all Sellafield site facilities and operations in achieving the company Fire Safety Objectives and ensuring compliance with relevant Fire Protection statutory obligations.

The work is unique, offering opportunity to support the full lifespan of facilities from Construction and Operation, through to Decommissioning and Demolition. You will provide advice to an extensive range of facilities, both modern and historic (some dating back to the 1950’s), with a wide variety of challenges a very diverse range of hazards, including conventional and nuclear safety.

Responsibilities:

To a varying degree, dependent upon the position and grade, the candidates would be expected to:

  • Identify and respond to fire safety issues and concerns, providing professional advice to Duty Holders in accordance with legislation and site policy / procedures, including:
– Specialist advice on Fire Compartmentation and passive Fire Protection.
– Provide advice to Designers of new facilities prior to producing new Fire Risk Assessments.
– Provide advice to Fire Engineers (Internal and external) on new build construction and when assessing changes to buildings where fire engineering designs may be affected.
– Review of proposed modifications to buildings/plant.
Where necessary document and produce technical reports in support of that advice.
  • Deliver a planned programme of Fire Risk Assessments and assurance ensuring that identified protective measures and corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  • Support the Duty Holder in the investigation of fire safety incidents and events, ensuring corrective actions are taken, and that learning opportunities are identified and shared.
  • Provide support to the Fire Protection Manager and SL Duty Holders’ interactions with internal and external regulators (ONR Fire Inspectorate) and other external organisations (e.g. WANO Peer reviews).
  • Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge of relevant Fire Protection legislation and site arrangements / standards and maintain professional competence through Continued Professional Development (CPD).
  • Deliver Fire Protection education programmes (including development and delivery of training) to improve the fire safety awareness and competence of the workforce.
  • Support, coach, and mentor (and where appropriate assess) Fire Protection role holders and those accountable for fire safety.

The Ideal Candidate

Due to the range of opportunities available, we welcome applications from candidates who may not meet all the skills below, but who are self-motivated and committed to personal development in order to grow their career with us. Mentoring and development will be given to candidates new to the nuclear sector to support their progress in the business.

Roles at the lower grade will generally support modern facilities with traditional Fire Protection risk profiles and roles at the higher grade will have a substantial requirement to support facilities designed to legacy standards, with significant risks (including nuclear/radiological hazards).

Candidates would ideally be Level 3 or 4 qualified in Fire Science and Fire Safety, or equivalent level of qualifications / experience, and hold membership with a relevant professional body (e.g., Institute of Fire Engineers, Institute of Fire Safety Managers). Effective communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships and influence professional employees and managers, as well as knowledge and interpretation of regulatory requirements is key for success.

Applicants with previous fire risk management experience in high hazard or highly regulated environments are welcome, as are candidates who have additional qualifications and experience in the fire safety industry.

Desirable Skills include:

  • Fundamental understanding of Fire Risk Management principles, and their application in relation to the key operations and activities of the Sellafield business.
  • Experience managing interactions and communicating with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Regulators, WANO, and other NDA establishments).
