The Role & Key Responsibilities

NOTE: Role will start on Surrey Pay Grade F and will progress to a Grade G (£30486-£36026) through demonstration of competency in the role.

As a Forensic Digital Media Examiner, you are responsible for ensuring that exhibits are handled correctly, maintaining continuity and integrity, recording all movements on our case management system.

You will be responsible for managing your workload, prioritising urgent work where necessary to fulfil investigative/court requirements and the unit’s service level agreement.

You will retrieve, convert, prepare, analyse, edit and enhance video and audio material, using editing and enhancement applications in support of investigative and criminal justice requirements.

You will ensure that all actions are accurately recorded and retained for audit, to fulfil criminal justice requirements and relevant quality standards (such as ISO 17025 and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice).

You will act as a point of contact for investigating officers and use technical knowledge to advise in the production of a submission strategy and solution to investigative requirements.

You will contribute towards achieving and maintaining Quality Standards. This will include validation, verification and calibration of equipment, quality assurance checks and peer review, as well as the review of standard operating procedures and other associated and relevant documentation.

You will also undertake the role of Internal Auditor in support of Forensic Investigations’ compliance with Quality Standards and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice.

Skills & Experience

To be successful as a Forensic Digital Media Examiner you will be a keen problem-solver, with proven experience of working methodically, often to tight deadlines with minimal supervision.

You must have attained a recognised academic qualification in a video/audio related or other relevant technical subject OR can demonstrate substantial experience working in a video/audio practitioner role. Indicative examples of this could be a diploma or degree in media studies or similar or evidence of relevant and recent experience working in a video/audio environment.

You must be able to demonstrate proven competency in the application of video/audio software applications (such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, iZotope, Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer).

Strong IT literacy is essential to the role. You will need to demonstrate experience using a wide variety of computer software applications and show that you have a good working knowledge of computer systems and their functionality. A high level of competence using the Microsoft Office suite (Word & Excel) is expected. Previous experience with coding/scripting/CLI is desirable but not essential.

It is desirable that the applicant has previous qualifications and/or work experience in an IT or law enforcement environment. It is also desirable to have an awareness of exhibit handling procedures (especially continuity and integrity). It is also desirable that an applicant can demonstrate basic understanding/experience of working to ISO17025 and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice.
