Job description

About OPSS

Do you care about the safety of products and want to protect people and places? Can we use your skills, knowledge and experience to enable UK business to thrive? If the answer is yes, then we would like to hear from you!

We are the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), part of the Department for Business & Trade (Previously the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy). We are here for the purpose of making regulation work to deliver real world impact. Regulation is a powerful Government tool to address market failures, influence behaviour and promote positive action. Crafted and delivered well, regulation can be an enabler of growth, innovation and efficiency.

Since early 2018 we have been building a positive and creative team that enjoys a position of influence and respect within an organisation that continues to grow, most recently with the addition of construction products regulation planned.

Our primary purpose is to protect people and places from product-related harm, ensuring consumers and businesses can buy and sell products with confidence.

Further information can be found on our website here

We recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles. We embrace diversity and promote equality of opportunity. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. There is a guaranteed interview scheme (DCS) for people with disabilities who meet the minimum selection criteria.

We are Inclusive

We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible and recognise how important inclusivity is to achieve the best outcomes. We hope to attract applications from all underrepresented groups.

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation if required to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform crucial job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.

About the Team

The Resource Management team is responsible for financial planning, monitoring and processing, and procurement and contract management. As a team, we are passionate about helping the organisation to deliver effectively, while also ensuring that colleagues are aligned with our processes to drive best use of public money.

We are a growing team, with a commitment to continuous improvement; if you enjoy solving problems and supporting delivery teams to make an impact, then this role offers an excellent opportunity to put those attributes to use!

About the role

Do you hold strong numerical ability and understanding of government accounting processes? Are you committed to providing a professional and solutions orientated service? Would you like to work in a team that makes a positive difference to people’s lives across the UK?

If the answer is yes, then we would like to hear from you!

We are looking for a resilient individual to join the team to lead our busy Financial Information and processing activity. Reporting to the Head of Resource Management, you will lead relationships with DBT and OGD Finance teams to ensure strong information reporting and forecasting for the effective and efficient use of public funds across OPSS. You will provide insight and advice to other sections of the Resource Management team, ensuring that financial management disciplines are embedded.

You should be comfortable working with complex data and be able to interpret and communicate this information in depth, being collaborative in your approach. You should work well under your own direction and be able to find opportunities to add value above and beyond existing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build and handle effective relationships and networks with DBT and OGD finance teams, acting as the lead point of contact for DBT Group Finance.
  • Lead on monthly financial forecasting to DBT and OGD finance teams, including escalating risks and resolving queries.
  • Lead on improving and maintaining the accuracy of data held in key systems relating to OPSS financial resourcing.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial controls, and that policies and procedures operate effectively.
  • Work closely with the G7 Reporting and Procurement leads to strengthen processes across the Resource Management team.
  • Lead the financial processing function to ensure an efficient service to teams across OPSS (you will be responsible for managing the SEO Team Leader).
  • Work productively with other team members to ensure the successful delivery of all aspects of its work, including procurement, commercial, risk and project management.
