Graduate Applications Engineer job for Mechanical Engineering graduate

As an Applications Engineer, you will act as a bridge between clients and the engineering teams. You’ll be able to use your technical knowledge, and people skills.

You’ll also get the opportunity to travel several times a year; either to see customers, or to train representatives in other countries. Usually in Europe, but possibly America too. You will be encouraged to progress within the business, and the future prospects are excellent.

You won’t be pigeonholed, as you might be if you went into a specialist CAD designer role for example; your all-round skills will be valued, and graduates who started in this role with the business are now in a range of roles, including Project Manager; Sales Engineer; Heavy Engineer; and Line Manager.

This includes some senior leaders. In the words of the Team Manager 'the opportunities are vast’.

You’ll also have the opportunity to work towards chartership, and development with the IMechE.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

The business designs and manufactures a range of environmentally friendly pumps that are used by businesses in a range of industry sectors. You don’t need to have any experience with these, as training is provided.

You will be speaking with customers who have an enquiry about a project; you’ll look into the complexities, and make sure that everything is ok in relation to engineering standards and specifications. You’ll then turn this into a quote, and follow it through to when it’s handed over to the internal project team.

You’ll be making recommendations, changing things as required, negotiating, and maybe going to see the client. It’s an interesting job.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

A Mechanical Engineering degree (Chemical Engineers will also be considered).

You will need plenty of confidence, as you’ll regularly be speaking with clients. At times you may even do a presentation to a room of 50 people. But you don’t need to be hugely outgoing, as long as you are able to hold yourself well in conversation.

WHERE YOU’LL BE BASED

Eastbourne, on the south-coast. Some employees commute from other areas, including Brighton and Hastings. The offices are near to the train station.
