Job description

J & A Smales Ltd produces high quality forage feed pellets within our Grass Production Plant. This is achieved utilising a system of environmentally friendly biomass boilers and large-scale belt dryers and our in-house pelleting plant.

The whole plant has been built from the ground up on the family farm and the Grass division of the business has grown significantly over the past 6 years to the point where we have become a significant supplier to the UK market, with our pellets being used by notable customers within the equestrian racing community, including The Royal Stables.

We now have an opportunity within the team for a Grass Plant Operative (Permanent, Full-Time). The successful applicant will be working to a rolling 4-on/4-off rota which will include both nights and days.

We are looking to appoint someone who can commence quickly, although we have some flexibility for the right person.

The position will suit someone with experience in a similar field, although we are comfortable appointing someone who wants a fresh start in a challenging environment.

The main duties will be as below:

· Operating a telehandler to move product around and load dryers/biomass boilers (in house training and tickets provided)

· Monitor the dryer software and adjust to maximise dryer throughput.

· Quickly resolve dryer faults as they occur, minimising loss of throughput.

· Monitor biomass boilers’ software and adjust to maximise boiler energy output.

· Quickly resolve boiler faults as they occur, minimising loss of heat/downtime.

· Retain and pass on relevant/important information during your shift and at handovers, to enable production to run smoothly and efficiently 24/7

· Daily plant maintenance & housekeeping

· Daily vehicle servicing

· Other tasks as required relative to the role.

You will be learning new processes initially and throughout the year and will be expected to take in a wide range of information, so you will need to be a keen learner and know when to ask for support.

The role requires you to be capable of understanding and quickly interpreting the information on the dryer/boiler screens so that you can make important adjustments to maximise dryer/boiler performance and maintain a high quality of product.

You will also need to quickly recognise when something falls outside of your remit and be able to concisely communicate the issue to a line manager to maintain productivity.

The continued success of the plant is dependent upon teamwork, with everyone contributing, so being dependable with a positive attitude, having good communication skills and being able to work with the wider picture in mind will enable you to make a full contribution.

Essential:

· Work Ethic – accountable to work colleagues.

· Good understanding of English – able to understand and interpret written & verbal communication and speak/read/write well.

· Mature approach and take responsibility for own welfare and that of colleagues and equipment.

· Team player – willingness to work co-operatively and supportively to solve problems and achieve targets.

· Able to follow procedures/instructions to agreed standards of working with good attention to detail, even with routine/repetitive tasks.

· Able to remain composed and maintain good behaviours in a fast-paced environment.

· Full driving licence and own, reliable transport
