Ground Maintenance and Arboricultural Director of Operations needed, to take the helm whilst the company continues to grow and evolve, with higher profile, higher margin contracts and new diverse and innovative projects.
Working on predominantly Commercial contracts – GM, Landscaping and Arboricultural – partnered with many large businesses, parish councils, schools, sports and event venues and heritage sites.
The successful candidate will have the experience, confidence, and nuance to continue the growth whilst bringing stability and staff development at a manageable pace. They will manage the day-to-day operations and will assist in bids and tenders, with a keen eye for risks, bonus caveats and forecasts.
The company is growing from an SME to a larger entity, and the Director will be the lead and will be charged with keeping the new contracts lean, lucrative and manageable.
The Job:
Reporting directly to the company owners, the Director will oversee the Contract Managers and Departmental Heads, who are responsible for approx. sixty operations staff. They will provide leadership to all teams and be involved in their recruitment interviews, hiring, appraisals and management including KPIs, setting targets and establishing budgets and be responsible for the management of an already high performing and management team.
Working alongside other key managers they will help create the company’s operations budget, ensuring that it is met and that all contracts and projects are completed safely, profitably and on time. The director will oversee the acquisition of new plant and equipment, whilst maintaining and development relationships with key suppliers. They will be closely involved in scheduling seasonal workloads and work closely with the estimating team to win new, profitable business. They will be a senior point of contact for clients and suppliers and be expected to actively promote the acquisition of new business. They will be responsible to prepare and submit all Health and Safety accreditations and our updating our Internal Management system and overseeing the annual audit.
The Person:
In order to be credible in this role the successful candidate will have a good horticultural knowledge and experience of grounds maintenance and landscaping, including maintaining contract profitability and scheduling works. They will currently be working in a senior operational role in a landscaping or grounds maintenance company and have both client and supplier facing experience. They will have previous experience of demonstrating a good knowledge of Health and Safety
The director must be self-motivated and have the ability to be a credible representative of the company with excellent influencing, negotiation and communication skills. They must be professional, proactive and assertive in their approach and can build effective relationships with both colleagues and our clients. They are to be commercially astute and able to accurately and profitably price works and maintain the profitability of ongoing contracts. They must be able to evaluate a project to understand the practical, technical, financial and qualitative requirements. It is essential that they are proficient in the use of MS Office and have a full UK driving licence.

- Scheduling Landscaping works and balancing resources.: 1 year (preferred)
- Managing Landscaping Projects, GM Contracts and Arb Teams: 5 years (required)
- Managing multiple Landscaping Operations Teams: 5 years (preferred)
- Financial reporting, creating and managing budgets: 3 years (required)
