Role Description

Job Purpose


The Ground- staff will have a proactive role in ensuring that the estate grounds are maintained to a high standard. At Princes, ground-staff are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but are not part of their regular job description. Where any task becomes a regular part of an employee’s responsibility, the job description will be changed in consultation with the employee.
Ground-staff are expected to work proactively and effectively whilst ensuring high-quality standards and effective use of resources. It is essential that the ethos within the department is reflective of the whole West Yorkshire Industrial Estate (WYIE).
Areas of responsibility within the department will include the following general and specific responsibilities:

Principal Responsibilities


Health & Safety
Princes have a comprehensive policy statement on Health & Safety. As a member of the Grounds-staff team you will take all reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself, your colleagues and everyone else who could be affected by your acts or omissions at work. You will be expected to co-operate with your manager on matters of health & safety to enable them to fulfil their obligations.
The job description does not form part of the contract of employment and may be varied in accordance with the demands of the role. The main duties and responsibilities are as follows:
  • To undertake grounds maintenance duties, e.g grass cutting, hedge trimming, weeding, litter picking and clearance of leaves.
  • Ensure Footpaths and walkways are gritted and snow cleared in adverse weather
  • Ensure the highest standards of work are achieved in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Ensure the Grounds are maintained and presented to good standard throughout the year
  • Provide effective materials and machinery management to ensure all equipment is correctly stored and maintained.
  • Ensure work areas and the equipment storage area kept clean, tidy and secure at all times.
  • Maintain cleanliness and general tidiness of all external zones.
  • Keep external entrances to the estate clean and clear of obstructions at all times.
  • Inspect and clean external bunds.
  • Inspect and restock external spill kits.
  • Clean the smoking shelter daily Monday to Friday.
  • Sample surface water drainage systems including the beck daily and take samples to the lab by 09:00 daily Monday to Friday.
  • Take meter readings from effluent sumps and escalate the site services manager where any abnormalities.
  • Carry out daily checks on Compressors, carbon filters, cooling towers and chillers in line with your training.

General Responsibilities
  • Understand and take an active role in lean manufacturing work practices including 5S, AM and problem solving (including root cause analysis), to drive continuous improvement activity throughout the site
  • You must exercise reasonable skill and care for the health and safety of yourself and other people at work and you must not interfere with or obstruct anything provided in the interests of health and safety at work.
  • The incumbent should demonstrate behaviours which are in line with the site values & help to improve the Quality, Safety & Environmental culture.
  • Support the business in working towards delivering our ethical trading and human rights vision.
  • When engaging with internal and external stakeholders (such as consumers, customers or suppliers) maximise any potential opportunities to communicate Princes’ ethical trade and human rights approach.

Role Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Experience in the use of tractor mounted equipment and ride on mowers essential.
  • Must be able to undertake maintenance of machinery
  • Use of the tractor for grit spreading
  • Self-motivated
