The Client:

Our client is a multi-faceted award winning organisation based in County Durham.

They are a family business, employing people across the north of England. They were established in 1976 and develop land for a variety of uses incl. residential and commercial property and mineral extraction.

This role involves a close working relationship with the Group finance team and links into the finance teams at an operating company level. BTW, did I mention their offices are brilliant.

The Opportunity:

For this Group Finance Controller position, you will be responsible for the Group accounting function incl. transactional team management, financial systems and Treasury functions. This role reports directly to the Group Finance Director.

Some of the key responsibilities for this successful person would be but not limited to:

You will be responsible for leading and managing a team of three Accounts Assistants. Externally, the position will need to maintain first class professional relationships with investors, banks and auditors.

  • You will prepare and review monthly Group management accounts ensuring they are accurately produced, properly supported and available on time.
  • Preparing statutory financial statements for Group companies together with supporting schedules and files for audit purposes.
  • Respond timely and accurate manner to all audit requests pertaining to the Group management company and consolidation.
  • Assist the Group Finance Director with financial planning for the Group incl. providing assistance in the production of comprehensive Group budgets and projections.
  • Assist in the maintenance and evolution of their current financial models. Although external support alongside this could be provided.
  • Be the “Superuser” and Finance System owner of the existing finance system (Access Dimensions, which is cloud hosted). Involved in any future system being deployed.
  • Provide support to the Group Finance Director in executing the Group's treasury function, including short term cashflow forecasting, payment controls and day-to-day meetings with the Group's bankers.

The Candidate:

The successful Group Financial Controller will be/have:

  • A fully Qualified Accountant - (ACA, ACCA, CIMA)
  • You will be experienced in a similar position and managed an accounts team before
  • You will now be working in Commerce and Industry, but may or may not have worked in Practice before (not necessarily BIG Four), but from an accounting firm.
  • Being highly proficient with financial modelling and acquisitive about working with finance systems will be a distinct advantage.
  • Broad financial and tax knowledge, incl. understanding of long term project accounting would be icing on the cake, bit definitely not essential.
  • Proactive, Team working and flexible - able to work across divisions, supporting other key members of the team
  • You will be confident and productive when challenging assumptions, strategies and variances from budget with senior management
  • Down-to-earth, a hands-on and non-ostentatious approach
  • A positive, self-motivated and driven character with a clear desire to succeed
