Job description

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Business Development to lead our sales and licensing strategies that will drive the growth of Oxford Languages’ licensing business. The key purpose of this role is to lead a team of sales representatives to identify and influence customers’ needs and to convert them into sustainable revenue. This role is accountable for delivering the department’s revenue goals and position OUP as a major player in the language data market. This role will also hold a number of accounts to develop further into successful, long term client relationships.

  • Set the strategic direction for Business Development, including the customers, geographical territories, and Markets to target.
  • Set the individual targets for each Business Development Manager; manage the delivery against those targets.
  • Act as the Account Manager for a handful of large accounts, closing new business opportunities and developing successful, long term client relationships.
  • Work closely with the Customer Success Team, ensuring seamless transitions and customer experience.
  • Be the main liaison point with the Product Management team on product pipelines and roadmaps, and customer needs in regard to product/ feature launches.
  • Be the main liaison point with the B2B Marketing team on a lead generation pipeline and the creation of sales collateral/ assets.
  • Coach and develop the team to ensure effective execution of the team’s activities.
  • Professionalise and embed business development workflows / process. Ensure that the team adheres to the established processes.
  • Champion the use of SalesForce, a customer relationship management (CRM) platform. Manage the use of SalesForce with team of Business Development Managers.
  • Formalise the approval process and decision-making governance. Ensure that OUP’s control framework is adhered to.
  • Actively champion the department strategic goals and operating principles. Support the team to understand the department's strategic goals, how their work contributes towards them, and equip the team with the tools to deliver projects and programmes aligned with those goals.
  • Lead a high-performing team of sales representatives. Provide guidance, feedback, and professional development opportunities to team members.

 

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office. 

About You

Experience:

  • Proven experience as a client-facing leader in a senior role, particularly in the language data and services market.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop a high-performing team.
  • Track record of customer-facing relationship building and stakeholder management.
  • Demonstrable networking skills and ability to leverage a strong network of internal and external contacts.
  • Understanding of financials and financial management.
  • Good familiarity with rights and intellectual property matters. Experience of managing via rights / legal deals.
  • Track record and experience of developing and embedding new processes and procedures.
  • Experience working in language data and services considered a plus.
