Job description

Are you an exceptional academic and academic leader with an international profile in an area of Applied Sciences? Awarded the title of University of the Year in the 2022 Times Higher Education Awards, Northumbria University is a research-intensive university with a global reputation for academic excellence. We pursue new thinking, forge new partnerships, create, and exchange new knowledge, and find new solutions. We put students at the heart of the University.  Comprising approximately 90 academic staff and 1,400 students, of which 200 are at postgraduate (PGR and PGT) level, Applied Sciences is one of five departments in Northumbria’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. We provide high-quality, research-informed education using a variety of innovative teaching and learning methods across an extensive portfolio of subjects in areas including biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, forensic science, food, and nutrition. The Department leads five research groups across a broad range of subjects from chemical sciences to microbiological and biomedical sciences, much of which is underpinned by molecular methods and an integrated multi-omics approach.  Reporting to the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor as a key member of her leadership team, you will provide strategic leadership and management of the Department, ensuring delivery of a high-quality student experience and outcomes. You will lead the Department’s focus on the priorities of research and of employer engagement to support the University’s academic aims, including REF, TEF and KEF.  Strategic planning for research development will include leading the Department’s estate and facility expansion planning, in collaboration with the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research. As a member of the Faculty Executive Group and of the wider University Academic Leadership Team, you will contribute to the development and implementation of the research and education strategy of both the Faculty and University.  We are looking for an exceptional candidate with a relevant academic standing and credibility, proven leadership and management experience, shared values, and ambition. The University is also seeking to make this a professorial appointment (meeting our professorial criteria) and you will be expected and supported to be an active researcher. Northumbria University is committed to creating an inclusive culture where we take pride in, and value, the diversity of our staff.  We encourage and welcome applications from all members of the community.  The University holds a bronze Athena Swan award in recognition of our commitment to advancing gender equality, we are a Disability Confident Leader, a member of the Race Equality Charter and are participating in the Stonewall Diversity Champion Programme.  We also hold the HR Excellence in Research award for implementing the concordat supporting the career development of researchers and are members of the Euraxess initiative to deliver information and support to professional researchers.  The University has implemented a range of flexible working arrangements, and we are happy to explore candidate requirements as part of the recruitment process.   For further information please visit https://www.gatenbysanderson.com/job/GSe106920/Head-of-Department---Applied-Sciences/ or contact our recruitment adviser at GatenbySanderson: stephanie.crossland@gatenbysanderson.com / 0113 268 0704.
