Job description

The Royal Society is the UK’s national academy for science. Its purpose is to recognise, promote and support excellence in science, and encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity. Scholarly communication has been central to the Society’s mission since it launched the world’s first scientific journal, Philosophical Transactions, in 1665. Researchers who have published in the journals of The Royal Society include Isaac Newton, Robert Hooke, Benjamin Franklin, Caroline Herschel, Charles Darwin, Michael Faraday, Dorothy Hodgkin, James Clerk Maxwell, Albert Einstein, Kathleen Lonsdale, Alan Turing and Stephen Hawking.

The Publishing section publishes a portfolio of 11 prestigious journals, which disseminate high quality research worldwide and generate a positive financial return for The Royal Society. The Society is committed to making all of its journals Open Access on sustainable models.

This newly created role manages all points of contact with authors, Editors and reviewers during the journal submission and publication process to deliver high quality peer reviewed articles, satisfied authors and readers, fast turnaround times and sustained article market share. The Head of Editorial & Production leads and mentors well established Editorial and Production teams to achieve these goals and will sit within the wider Publishing directorate of approximately 30 staff. Central to the role is continuous review and improvement of workflows across all Editorial and Production processes.

Reports to: Publishing Director

Line manages: Senior Publishing Editors; Senior Commissioning Editor; Production Managers

Location: 6-9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG – mainly office based role, some remote working available

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week

Contract: Permanent

Pay Band: F

Salary: £61,506 - £76,882
