Our client, a global society publisher, requires a new Head of Editorial & Production. This newly created role manages all points of contact with authors, Editors and reviewers during the journal submission and publication process to deliver high-quality peer-reviewed articles, satisfied authors and readers, fast turnaround times and sustained article market share.
The Head of Editorial & Production leads and mentors well-established Editorial and Production teams to achieve these goals and will sit within the wider Publishing directorate of approximately 30 staff. Central to the role is continuous review and improvement of workflows across all Editorial and Production processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensuring that all journal Editorial offices run smoothly and efficiently.
- Overseeing the effective operation of the infrastructure needed to support Editorial offices
- Negotiating supplier agreements to provide cost-effective, reliable and quality services
- Continuously improving Editorial office and Production workflows to deliver an excellent user experience, informed by feedback from author survey and KPI data
- Ensuring that high standards of peer review integrity are maintained
- Positioning the journals at a level such that Fellows of the Society wish to publish in them
- Facilitating the transition of journals to sustainable Open Access models
- Managing journal Editor and reviewer teams so that they are diverse and inclusive
- Delivering agreed objectives within budgeted cost
- Building annual budget for Editorial and Production teams
- Managing direct reports, coaching, developing and ensure strong performance
- Attending Editorial Board Meetings and relevant conferences
- Participating in monthly Publishing Management Team meetings to shape Publishing activities and strategy, and collaborating with the Publishing Director and the Head of Sales & Marketing
- Actively engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including staff in other sections, Fellows and Officers of the Society, funders, scientists, partners, publishers and industry experts
- Driving and managing the launch of new journal titles, as needed
- Managing own learning needs, taking responsibility for identifying and develop skill gaps
Skills & Experience:
- Extensive knowledge of STM journal Editorial and Production systems, including best practices and technologies
- Delivery of business results, with a particular focus on cost management
- Analytical approach which is guided by relevant data and KPIs
- Familiarity with Open Access publishing models at a strategic and operational level
- Constructive and collaborative approach to teamwork, networking and building relationships
- Track record of influencing, negotiating with and persuading others
- Ability to find solutions, take initiative and make decisions
